WHO: Demeter & Hades
WHEN: Wednesday night
WHERE: Demeter's apartment
WHAT: Hades is coming to visit the sister/mother-in-law. Demeter wishes her brothers would stop dropping by.
WARNINGS: Talk of violence, tba

Almost a week earlier Demeter had been visited by Poseidon, an afternoon that had ended in the sort of violence that Olympians were always so fond of. She had taken a long time washing away the blood and inspecting herself in the mirror, one of her eyes swollen shut, a heavy cut above and through her lip, bruises and scrapes all over her, her wrist bone cracked by his weight and wrapped now in a thick bandage. Poseidon, of course, had blamed it all on her but Demeter wasn't fool enough to ever fall for his manipulations.

She'd remained in her apartment since it happened, having food delivered so she didn't have to go outside looking like this. Demeter was still as vain as any other god and the Greeks were famed for their pride. She refused to let humanity see her until her skin was one again unblemished.

When the doorbell rang she expected it to be her dinner and she opened it, only realising she felt a god after she'd done so. Hades was standing in her doorway and Demeter's expression was one of distaste (and one that hurt to make). "What do you want?"

Persephone owed him. Preferable with something skimpy, but she still owed him because when Makaria had told them Demeter had canceled the visit it had taken him one look from her and a sigh before he'd grabbed his coat to go speak to her to reconsider.

She could hate him all she liked, but this was important to his daughter and therefor important to him.

He'd waited, not expecting the sight that greeted him. He frowned, "What happened to you?"

Demeter straightened. "Nothing," she told him, voice full of all the pride that she could muster despite her bettered appearance.

"It is pointless to lie to me Demeter." He leaned against the doorframe watching her. "A thousand souls could tell you that. I may not see the answers but I see the question." He sighed, "Persephone will worry when she hears of this, and I am not inclined to see her fret when I am able to fix this. So tell me."

Demeter almost snapped that he wasn't so say a word to her daughter but instead sighed heavily, realising the pointlessness of that. What would Persephone care now that she had been taken over so completely by Hades? She left the door open for him, sure he wasn't going to leave her alone, and walked back into the apartment. "Why are you here, Hades?"

If she was angry, perhaps she would tell him what had happened to him. He was a lot of things, but he did care for her. Even if she frustrated him. Riling her anger always made her scream her thoughts at him, even if it gave him a headache later.

He stepped into the apartment, curiously looking around before he removed his coat and settled it over a chair. "You canceled on Makaria. Now I know why I will inform her, but it was requested I go ask you to keep your grievances with me and not reflect them on her."

"I have no grievances against your child," Demeter muttered, sitting down heavily and watching the half full bottle of absinthe on the coffee table. "I would not have her see me in this state, however."

"As I said, I am aware of the why now." He moved to the seat infront of her and sat down. He had a lot of patience and time. He wasn't expected back for some time. "And I'm only a messenger here Demeter."

He watched her, only thinking of two who could have done this. He'd have a chat with both if it was necessary. "Persephone is speaking of more children." Maybe if he took a bat to her sore buttons she would speak. "You drink?" he pointed to the bottle and leaned forward, "because if we are to endure one another's company I suggest we do it with alcohol near. I have told her it will not be easy, but what do you want? She's your daughter. Get an idea in her head and she refuses to release it until she's gotten her bloody way."

At his comment that they were having more children Demeter closed her eyes at the exquisite agony of it all. Demeter was childless herself now. Persephone was the only one who had survived to these shores and now even she had left. What use was a mother without a child?

"I drink," Demeter acknowledged, standing to get another small glass from the cabinet nearby and putting it down. She filled one for herself and one for him, the bright green fire that was keeping her stable of late. "Why do you come to tell me these things?" Demeter asked, draining her own glass in one. She looked at him with an expression of disbelief. "Do I appear to you that I've not suffered enough? Oh, by all means continue," Demeter said, waving him on. "I see no reason why not."

He took the glass and leaned back, "you seem to think I enjoy seeing you wounded, or that I get pleasure from torturing you. So I will continue speaking of matters I know that are close to your own heart until you tell me who did this to you." He almost smiled and sipped from the drink, drawing back. "Stronger then I am used to, where do you get it?"

He settled one arm along the back of the chair, "she's set on her course though. I keep reminding her of my station, that us Death-Gods aren't exactly known to have a million children, but she's got this habit of pretending she's not paying attention to what I am saying. She get's that from you. OR she distracts me," it was a low blow and he looked at his sister over his glass. "She's very good at that."

He claimed he didn't want to hurt her, but Demeter could find no way to ever believe that. "The goddess of Absinthe," Demeter told him without feeling as she refilled her glass. "This is her drink and she and I have grown close."

His words about Persephone cut through her and Demeter held her hand up to silence him, her eyes once again closed and her voice pained. "Please. Don't." She couldn't deal with his taunting after having to hear the mocking from Poseidon.

That made him raise an eyebrow. Demeter had a powerful ally and didn't even want to use it. Where had the woman who had put the earth in eternal winter gone? "Ah. Mortals and their new Gods."

It was like arguing with a brick wall, but he was patient. He'd learned how to coax diamonds out of coal after all. "So tell me which one of my brothers did this so I can deal with it. I can keep going you know."

"Powerful allies they make," Demeter said thoughtfully, still unsure if she was going to bring Absinthe into this. She had the feeling her Green Fairy would destroy the entire pantheon and Demeter held her back against that. It become more and more tempting though as she cared less and less for any of them.

She didn't look at Hades while she spoke, sipping carefully from the glass. "Poseidon, who else? But there is nothing to be done by you about it."

He nodded, hoping she would not bring their downfall on all of them. He had his family to think of, and he would protect them until he fell. He just wished he could be of more help.

His grip tightened on the glass, "of course. He is becoming more and more violent as time passes." He raised an eyebrow. "I disagree, there's plenty to be done about it. One of them is giving Hecate a call, then I will have a conversation with my little brother."

"There will be no conversation," Demeter told Hades firmly, her bright eyes turning to his. "I will not have that vile beast laughing about how I went running to my brother to fix things."

He sighed, "you mistake me Demeter, I am commanded by no one. Besides when I am done, he will barely have strength to do more then laugh. Poseidon must be reigned in before he causes more trouble. He is forgetting his limits. I shall remind him of them." He downed the glass and set it on the table. "And I practically had to force the information from you Demeter. I keep forgetting how few trust me."

Demeter leaned across to glare at him. "I have nothing but my pride," she told him with restrained anger, "and you would see that taken from me as well." It was important that Demeter remained appearing strong. She needed that, now especially.

He rolled his eyes, "oh Styx would you hear yourself? I swear I'm the Lord of the Dead and not even I am this moody." He leaned forward, keeping her eyes. "Letting Poseidon walk in here and beat you is idiotic. I've always valued you Demeter, either as an opponent or an ally. I have moments where I can understand you, and days where I want to force some fucking logic into your head. But it seems you lack the brains I thought you had. What are you trying to prove here? That you are the world saddest woman? That everyone, even the Fates, must be against you?" His voice remained deadly calm. Hades rarely yelled.

"I have news for you Demeter, Life sucks. Then you Die and it's still not over. You are the single most difficult woman I have ever encountered. Letting him walk all over you proves no point save for your idiocy. I am offering my help and still you throw it away for a grudge that you need to learn to let go already. Persephone is not taken from you, she remains your daughter. But she has grown and wishes to make her own choices. If you have an inch of respect for the girl you'll let her have it. Styx Demeter if I can let Makaria out of my sight and into a world populated by my brothers, surely you can do the same."

He didn't understand her at all. Didn't understand how much the winter took out of her and how much she needed the spring of her daughter's return. He could never understand what it was the be the goddess of the earth and watch it all destroyed around her, to be the symbol of motherhood and unable to protect or keep her own children.

"I let him do nothing," Demeter told him, her own voice tired as she reached a hand to rub her temple. (She was bruised there though and she drew the fingers back away with a expression of annoyance.) "The dark season is death to me but soon I will have my strength once more and he shall be punished. Don't pretend that your desire to go after him has anything to do with me other than as an excuse."

She said nothing of Persephone. Nothing of Makaria.

He threw up his hands in sheer frustration. "Jesus fucking Christ you're worse then Makaria. And at least she has the excuse of being sheltered." He rolled his eyes. "My desire to punish him is because he hurt you, and he should be leashed." With a sigh he rose. "You're impossible. Won't even try and listen. Women. All the bloody fucking same."

Which was perhaps sexist but he had his faults. And Demeter frustrated him by refusing to see any good in him, refusing to see the part of him that had gotten her daughter to love him, the part that had his daughter wind him around her fingers.

Cursing he shrugged his coat on, "fine you and Poseidon keep doing these fucked up mating rituals of yours and I will stay in my corner. You're all fucking insane, but nooo Hades is the one whose got the bloody reputation. Hades is the name everyone bloody well fears. Doesn't matter if his siblings are cracked and fucking retardedly insane, I'm the bad guy."

She didn't believe Hades' claims that he wanted to punish Poseidon for hurting her for even a moment. He'd never given her any reason to believe any such thing since the day he'd taken her daughter from her. Let him rant and rave as much as he liked.

"Do close the door on your way out," Demeter said with forced ease, pouring herself another drink. "And take care that daughter of yours isn't left alone."

He rolled his eyes. "One of these days that pride of yours will have you lose everything, even what's most precious to you. And mind the drinking, one alcoholic's enough." He shook his head.

"Fucking woman. She's protected at all times. I've ensured it." With a sigh he moved to the door. Persephone really, really,
really
owed him.

He glanced back, "by nymphs." She just had to bring matters like this up time and time again. "I have better pets Demeter, and a hero at her side whenever she goes outside the walls. I have ways of keeping track of her beyond those things as well. I know my brothers well Demeter, and Makaria's been taught to be cautious."

Demeter could have almost laughed at how the point flew completely over her brother's head. About how it always did in his attempt to always somehow be the Good Guy.

Demeter didn't say that she had once known her brothers well too. There was no point because she didn't know them anymore.

Instead she stood up from where she sat and raised the bottle to him as a gesture of goodbye, walking off down the hall towards her bedroom. She planned to finish the bottle and sleep.
