His smile was humorless. "For a long time, it was me against the world. A leftover from living in a self-imposed hermitage. But that's why I'm hiring more people. To help me out and maybe let me sleep more than four hours a night. To let me see you and Bernie, and not forget what my friends look like. I want to be a better role model. A better person."
His laugh was a bit stronger, but still shaky. "Believe me, if I hadn't found a chair quickly, I would have fallen over. It was jarring, to say the least." He nodded in return. "I've already got an interview set up, and if it works out, it'll be a huge help. And then I'll be able to help with dinner, and maybe be in bed by 11. Which may just be the first time in...forever. And I understand. You've been so patient already, which is really more than I deserve."
