Jessie flinched when he said what had happened to his hands and squeezed her eyes shut. Quickly she opened them again, trying to appear as though she'd never reacted at all. What kind of person could do something like that?
She didn't ask. She didn't know if Joey wanted to tell her, and she didn't know if she wanted to know. She would need time to adjust to this whole idea first. "Can you walk?" she asked him. "You can come sit in the kitchen while I cook and admire your new cake if so. If not, I can bring the cake in here for you."
