New York City was not what Akito had expected. It still had not been long enough for him to decide if this was good or bad. Stunned by the sudden change, he'd spent most of his trip so far in Pippa's apartment. Eventually, she was able to lure him out to see a show or visit a park. They were currently returning from "late night sushi," something that, despite her complaining, Pippa was becoming very fond of.

Akito was very good at dodging other pedestrians while keeping his eye on Pippa. She was much more relaxed walking down the street at dark than he thought she should be. Her hands stuffed into the pockets of her long coat, she seemed to even have a hop in her step despite wearing treacherously tall heels on the uneven walkway.

"Are you always this glum, or is it just amplified because I've been drinking?" Pippa's voice cut sharply through his inner monologue and he felt his hand grip the paper take-out bag just a little tighter. His lips pressed into an even thinner line, and she laughed loudly. "Everything is fine, Akito. New York's not going to eat you."

"There's power in this city," he commented, indifferent. "So many like us. Is there a reason?"

She shrugged, stepping over a particularly nasty crack in the sidewalk. "Maybe. It was a big immigrant port. I don't know, though. I haven't really thought about it."

"Tokyo has less."

"I guess so." She pursed her lips. "New York's a little more diverse, don't you think?"

"Tabun-na..." Even though he was influenced partly by her, his world felt very limited compared to Pippa's. He'd not physically met anyone else like them, but Pippa showed him once, on her laptop, just how many lived nearby.

"Don't worry!" Her hand slipped out of her pocket and clapped over his shoulder as she leaned into him. "You have onee-san to take care of you!"

She reached in with the other hand to pinch his cheeks and he ducked swiftly out of the way. "Urusai!"
It's like a text adventure, except with midgets.

There was a feeling of home in the air as Kumori slinked through the streets. It smelled of fish. Quite uncomfortable in this vast city. In his silky bobtail form, giant golden eyes scanned around, the black just thin slits. He kept to the shadows, carefully stalking the two forces that walked by. One smelled of perfume, dressed cleverly, a woman. The other the familiarity he'd detected before.

Whiskers twitching in the air he followed that smell waiting for the right opportunity to pounce. Bakeneko's were fond of women, stealing their pretty faces.

Akito expertly dodged Pippa as she tried to ruffle his hair or tweak his nose. He was used to this game with his brother, although they tended to throw themselves into it a bit more. She was also at a disadvantage with her shoes and tipsiness.

"Why won't you love me?" Pippa whined, dissolving into a fit of giggles by the end.

"You're disturbing the food," he said, "and you are embarrassing."

She pulled her fingers through her hair, flipping it behind one shoulder. "Your face is embarrassing."

"I still don't understand how that is funny."

She pouted, kicking her foot out exaggeratedly, but did not verbally reply. Akito felt chilled, cold to the bone suddenly, and his back straightened reflexively. He glanced over at Pippa, who was still pouting, but looked otherwise fine. Why did he feel so alert? "Ano..."

The cat stopped his hair bristling at Akito's movements. The man was wary, but that didn't stop Kumori from rubbing up against his legs. Not a sound came from his mouth, just an malevolent look in those golden eyes. He grinned with those eyes moving toward the pretty, long-legged woman, greeting her with the same curious affection.

Akito nearly jumped out of his skin at the contact against his legs. He was hit with another chill, but pushed it down as he quickly side-stepped the thing in his personal space. A cat.

A cat, and it was currently weaving its way around Pippa's legs, staring at him with horrible, old eyes. Akito continued to stare, silent, but Pippa was all a-twitter, her face lighting up at the new visitor.

"A kitty!" she practically squealed, her mood making a dynamic change. "Look. Look, Akito!"

'I'm looking,' he thought, staring at her with a dazed expression. She'd suddenly turned into an idiot, cooing and babbling and making absolutely no sense, English or otherwise.

Pippa bent at the waist, holding the back of her hand near the cat's mottled face. "Aw, you're so cute! What're you doing here, huh? Lookit your little tail!"

Suddenly, Akito blinked, his mouth set in a hard line, and said flatly: "Bake-neko."

There was a sharp hiss at Akito's accusations, little tail uncurled as far as it would go, silky fur raised. He growled under his breath, running back around and in between Pippa's legs. He licked the hand she stretched out. This human was almost too easy.

Kumori did not look like a stray. He was healthy with rich fur and a stocky body. He was well fed (almost too well fed) without any collars or tags.

Pippa gave a delighted little laugh when the cat licked her, tongue rough and scratchy. She bent at the knees to get a bit lower, tucking one hand under her legs to smooth her coat down so it wouldn't touch the sidewalk. She blinked up at Akito, oblivious. "Huh?"

Clearly, all intelligent thought had left the American diva. Akito wondered how she even got by day-to-day, sometimes, acting like this. "Pippa, leave it. It's troublesome."

"It's nice!" She gave the cat a quick scratch behind its ears as proof. "You're just mean. He's so mean, right? Where's your mommy, kitty?"

Akito's mouth turned downward a bit at every word Pippa said until it was set in a deep frown. "Pippa--"

"Are you hungry?" she asked the cat, fluttering her lashes at her counterpart and looking pointedly at the bag.

Akito blanched. "No." There was ootoro in that bag, and there was absolutely no way he was giving fatty tuna to even a normal animal.

There still wasn't a sound that came from the cat other than the lowered growl as Akito seemed to be getting in his way. The claws would come out if he kept pushing it.

Kumori inquisitively pawed at Pippa's bag. Bakeneko's would eat absolutely anything. He'd shove down a plastic container if he wanted to. There was something in this man that had pulled Kumori from the shadows. The taste of his homeland. At that the multi-colored cat bit down on Akito's leg.

"ITAI!" Annoyed and on edge, Akito began to ramble in his native tongue, talking about "stupid cats" and "demon animals" and "why do I see one in New York and not Tokyo, how does this even happen to me?"

Pippa stood straight, then, chewing on her bottom lip. Akito was acting strange. It wasn't really normal to see such a nice cat in the middle of the city, either, but she could just assume it had gotten out of the apartment it lived in and scampered away somewhere. Lumbered, really - it was a pretty large cat. She couldn't really explain Akito's behavior, though, and that was what bothered her the most. "What is going on with you?" She crossed her arms against her chest, completely ignoring the fact that his leg had just been attacked.

"I--" He looked down at the cat, then at Pippa. He had half a mind to run and hide behind her. But, he remembered quickly, he was fairly powerful in his own right, and if he had to throw his weight around, he would. "Listen to me. That--" He pointed at the animal. "--is not normal. There are stories, at home. I didn't think it was real, but."

Pippa sighed. "You're being unreasonable."

Akito stabbed a finger in the direction of the cat, standing his ground. "That is a demon cat!" he shouted, causing a bystander to look his way. He immediately flushed with embarrassment.

"You're ridiculous!" She laughed. "You're just being superstitious. There's no such thing."

He wanted to ask how she knew. Wasn't he the one from Japan, not her? But he certainly wasn't going to get in an argument with her in the middle of the busy street.

Kumori hissed again giving Akito one more good whack with his paw (claws intact). He sat between the two as they fought over the truth of his identity. There was almost a human-like grin that creeped over his furry features when Pippa disregarded the man's warning. Women were easy to win over. Show a little attention and she would be putty in his hands. If she refused him, he wondered how much fat she really had to make a late night snack.

"Baka bake-neko." Though his tone was indifferent, Akito had had just about enough of the feline. "We are not mortal. Go bother someone temporary."

"Seriously." Pippa rolled her eyes skyward. "Listen to yourself. Even if you were right - which you're not - don't you think I can take care of myself? I'm stronger than you, anyway," she added petulantly. Quickly, she leaned forward and snatched the bag from him, leaving him wide-eyed. "Come on. We're going home. And kitty can have the tuna--"

Akito sputtered. "But--"

"Kitty," she stressed, "can have the tuna, and then he can be on his way. Okay?"

His golden eyes flicked mischievously at Akito. This was almost too easy. This one lived on the high life, maybe he could get himself out of ally ways and streets for at least a little while. It was damp and cold. Shaking lightly, he released the first sound from his little black mouth other than a growl.

He stood on his hind legs, stretching his paws against her leg with impatience.

Pippa smiled, giving the cat a quick scratch under the chin before continuing on her way to her apartment. Either the cat would follow or it wouldn't. She glanced over her shoulder just to make sure Akito was moving yet, or if he'd stand and pout.

The main reason Akito started walking was to get away from the cat. He'd try his hardest to keep the thing out of Pippa's home, but he knew she was stubborn. She'd do what she wanted, so he would just try to keep her informed, and hopefully safe.

The feline was quick to follow, just silent pitter patters of his feet against pavement. She'd given the invite, she'd hardly turn him lose now. Ever so often he glanced over at her male companion grinning with his shiny cat eyes.

He slipped into the apartment through the thin crack of the door even before Pippa had opened it all the way, flattening out his fat cat form and seated himself in the middle of her kitchen.
