Echo hated Valentine's Day. It was a day that she thought was pointless and everything about it, apart from Eros' influence, just downright sucked. Sure, she liked her friend and the fact that he could make her feel less down. But she still didn't like the day that was set aside wholly for love and lust and all the things that Echo simply didn't have. Call her jealous, because that's exactly what she was.
Which is exactly why she had settled on the couch with her two friends Ben and Jerry and turned on a horror film. It was better than being out with all the saps who liked being romanced and getting roses and chocolates and jewelry and sexy lingerie that Echo herself would never ever have the chance to wear.
She wasn't bitter. Really...

What had been a flimsy shadow tracing his every step had turned into a significant constant in his story. Echo was just a whisper in the wind that he wanted to squash with his own words. She had been of little significance to him, someone else to make him beam brighter among the stars.
Today was different. Today he awoke to find his chest heavy with the desire for someone. Someone that wasn't himself. He'd hardly been able to think, looking like a deer in the headlights when he'd stood in front of the camera. He was sent home early with strict orders to rest or the dark circles would creep under his eyes. He looked as beautiful as ever but for the first time ever he had a longing for someone.
He couldn't get her out of his head and that bothered him. He could hardly picture anything else besides her golden hair, or imagine the light dancing off her eyes. Those soft cheeks, and those rosy lips.
The knock on her door was impatient, worried and frustrated. Rejection was the worst thing Narcissus could ever face.

Echo frowned when she heard the knock. She could feel whoever it was and they were someone familiar. She just hoped it was someone friendly because she was in no mood to be bothered today. Maybe it was Daphne; she really needed to visit her friend.
So she pulled on her ear muffs as a precaution. But when she opened the door a look of complete shock showed on her face. And then before she could stop herself she was shaking her head and motioning for him to leave. To just go away and not abuse her today. She needed to be left alone on this day of all days.

"Wait!" he gestured with his hand for her to not close the door in his face. His own heart sunk at her sudden discomfort. This wasn't the way it was supposed to be, he'd never laid eyes on her before except in disgust. How could he possibly fathom that this creature was anything beautiful.
And yet...his eyes danced upon her face, taking in every little and delicate feature of her small form.

Echo was frustrated. As much as she loved Narcissus and longed to be with him, she knew only one side of him. The side that hated and despised her. Her heart had been broken time after time and Valentine's was supposed to be a day of love. She simply couldn't take his harsh words today. Not today.
So she shook her head again and grabbed the nearest piece of paper and a large sharpie and wrote "GO AWAY!" and showed it to him.

That wasn't the look he desired. The paper she held trembled from her own hand and the desire to soothe it was almost a knee-jerk reaction. Why? Why was he suddenly so focused on her? He'd not once combed a hand through his hair in delight. He'd not even glanced at himself in the mirror. That proverbial mirror that was more a mindset than a physical object.
His hand clutched hers, moving the paper from her hands. "No." He was insistent. There may have even been a tinge of tears that hit the corners of his eyes. She couldn't make him go. He'd never get over it.

If there ever was a moment for longed for her own, free voice, it was now. This was much too uncomfortable. Much too humiliating and she couldn't handle it. She just kept shaking her head. As much as she had wanted his attention, she had never expected it. There was always that reminder that he could never love her. She was not lovable. She had come to terms with it... maybe.
Her jaw clenched and she held her breath. How she wanted her voice! She wanted to scream at him and tell him to leave now before he started on how dreadful she looked today. Instead, there were the screams from her movie that she had left on. She fought her own feelings and desires of wanting to reach out and finally embrace him, because the only time she ever had he had rejected her. All she could do was mouth No as she shook her head continuously.

Those pretty hazel eyes glazed over wanting her to not put such distance between them. He stepped forward and she stepped back. "Echo," he said in a soft voice, persistent, needy. He wasn't sure if he'd ever even said her name before even if he knew it as well as his own.
He stepped inside her apartment closing the door behind him wondering with every breath why she wasn't rushing to his arms. This was painful.

As much as she had wanted to hear him say her name she had missed it. Even in this strange moment, she had missed it. It made her heart ache and she only looked sadder by the minute.
This whole thing made no sense. He had always hated her. Why the sudden change? It was too good to be true.

"Will you not give me a proper greeting?" A kiss on the cheek, the touch of her hand. Anything. He needed to have her close or he felt his heart would just burst with sadness.
Narcissus wiped his eye from the tear that just yesterday would have been considered a farce. Now it was as if he meant every word of it.

Echo honestly thought that was a really dumb question. Of course she wanted to give him a real greeting, but considering the circumstances and the fact that she wouldn't speak freely she couldn't. She didn't know why he was there, so she didn't know what to do besides back away and get as far as she could. Which wasn't very far at all. The most she would be able to do was lock herself in the bathroom She wondered if there was a pipe she could climb down...
She frowned, not liking him seemingly distressed. After several more steps her back was against the hallway wall. She waved him away, to leave. If this was how she had come off then she couldn't blame him for how he'd reacted.

Narcissus was positively in awe with this creature in a way he just didn't think was ever possible. He was about to step closer when a knock came to her door. His eyes shot toward it as if the very glare would melt whomever stood on the other side. No one was to intervene with this moment.
Achilles did. After a few more knocks the golden warrior made his appearance in what looked to be a very distressing moment for Echo. His brows furrowed. He all but lunged toward Narcissus who needed his pretty face snapped in half. Achilles' fist clenched giving Echo a look that spoke volumes for the amount of concern he held.
"Who is this?!" Narcissus hissed, not at all put off by the demi-god's presence. Who could compare to Narcissus?

Echo was on the verge of tears. She really did want to give Narcissus anything he wanted, but she felt this wasn't the right time. This just didn't feel right and she wasn't entirely sure why.
Her eyes widened when Achilles came through the door. It was a moment of relief, because she knew if anyone could convince Narcissus that now was not the time to decide Echo was worth his while, it was him. Unfortunately, she couldn't openly express any of this.
And even if she wanted to, apparently now was not a good time to do that either seeing as Achilles thought there was something going on that warranted an assault. She gave Narcissus a look that clearly started Really? You're asking me? since she obviously couldn't answer.

Achilles was arrogant because of his own pride. Of what he had accomplished. What he was good at. Narcissus was vain because of his own vanity. It made him worthless. Achilles grabbed his shirt collar with one hand, picking the willowy man up easily. Narcissus' feet barely grazed the ground now.
"You're not wanted, vile excuse for man!" Achilles eyes were dark. He could kill Narcissus with ease and not care that it would add more blood to his hands.
Narcissus looked to Echo and then Achilles as if she'd just ruined his perception of her. His whole world was crushed. His heart was broken. She had found another?

Echo let out a scream at Achilles' actions. While she appreciated the help she didn't want this. So she intervened, stepping closer to try and get Achilles to set Narcissus back down.
She shook her head at him now, waving her hands in a motion for him to stop. She didn't want anyone hurt. She wanted no blood or pain. Just for this to stop.

Achilles set Narcissus down for Echo. He could have ripped him to shreds from pure anger, but he didn't because of her wordless plea. She'd been on his mind since that night, he wasn't going to ruin this feeling because Narcissus crushed her under his foot for the sheer pleasure of it.
"Leave." His voice was heavy. He gave Narcissus no option. The scorned lover was tossed out the door with one shove.

Echo couldn't believe what was happening right in front of her. Where she knew Narcissus to be only hateful toward her she had seen nothing but longing for her. It was perhaps the strangest thing she had ever witnessed. She had her suspicions but she couldn't just blame Eros without knowing for sure.
She was thankful Achilles didn't hurt him but she was still shocked at the ordeal. Once he door was closed she sighed heavily and signed 'thank you'

He brushed her hair back from her face, removing the muffs off her ears like he had the time before. "Are you alright?" he seemed overly concerned, losing some of that anger that had been pent up the moment he had entered her home to find Narcissus there. He wasn't welcome. No one was welcome that would hurt this darling girl.

Echo was taken off guard and actually took a step back. That was unsuspected. But she had to repeat his words, as she nodded her head once to answer. She made a motion as if to ask something and then went to the dry erase board on the fridge and wrote what are you doing here?

"I came to see you. Unexpected I am aware," his thumb caressed her cheek, voice so soft it was as if he felt more than friendship. Before today he'd sought out to protect her as Achilles often did of weak women. He wanted her to empower herself, but today was different.

Unexpected, that was certainly true. But Echo was beginning to wonder if Achilles being there was a friendly visit or if someone else was behind it. She couldn't admit her own feelings in the matter, because there were many constraints in her life. This was no time to take advantage. It would be wrong and Echo couldn't live with that on her conscience. She had no choice but to repeat his words again, this time with a little frustrated grunt at the end. She took back her ear muffs and put them on, shaking her head at him. She knew exactly who was behind this. She pulled away and this time wrote one name on the board, EROS. She was angry he would do this.
