Who: Red Baron and Emma Franklin
When: Friday evening
Where: Emma's apartment
Warnings/rating: tbd
Emma knew her roommates had been planning a surprise party for several weeks. There were so many mischievous looks and accidentally left out receipts and messages a girl could stumble upon before deciding something was up. Actually, she had been suspecting something for a while but she had given them the satisfaction of not saying a word to anyone. Their plans of taking her out for studying at the library had worked, considering she had a test the following Monday and she was eager to make an A.
When she arrived with one of her roommates, she felt her stomach knot up a little. Either she was correct and would have to put on a fake surprised face, or she was wrong and there was no cake waiting behind the door. The night before they had made cupcakes and hadn't made too much of a fuss. But when she unlocked the door and everyone jumped out to surprise her she did best to act like she had no idea.
The cake sat perched on the table, ready for her to blow out the candles as those who had been invited sung Happy Birthday. She couldn't help grinning, setting her backpack down in her room and then came back to the small crowd. There were about ten people in total and as she looked around she saw no sign of her father. It was going to be awkward enough considering she'd barely spoken with him, but then maybe her birthday was the perfect time to chat over cake and drinks. The only thing really missing was a pile of presents, but she had told her friends she didn't want anything. That didn't mean there weren't gifts hidden here and there. She just didn't see them.
As they all stood around, talking and eating and drinking Emma's phone rang. It was her father and she gave him the okay to come over. And then she felt a knot in her stomach again.

Conrad wasn't sure what his new daughter would want for her twenty-first, but he wasn't going to come empty handed. The ring was a small gift that was some reference to his real identity. If Emma had any real attachment to him she would have some pull even without realizing it.
He came into a room full of people he didn't know, searching for this new addition to his life. He'd never had a daughter before, or a wife, none of the connections a man should have had by his age. To the rest of Emma and her friends he looked no more than seven years older, a far more handsome man than he even thought of himself in World War I.

Emma had gone to change, because she didn't want to go out for her birthday smash in jeans. She had changed before he arrived and was mingling with a couple of friends who were in her class with the Monday test.
Most people were sitting, and for anyone who thought all college students drank night after night it was probably a surprising display. Emma herself had settled at the table, eating some of the dinner her roommates had prepared. It was the only thing they had openly shared with her. They decided not to spring for take out since Emma preferred homemade meals. It was her special party.
Then one of her roommates came over and sat across from her, "Hey, there's this guy here who I've never seen. Think we should kick him out?" Emma made a face, "Um, hold on." She got up and looked into the small crowd. "Nope, don't kick him out. That's..." she turned to her roommate, "Remember what I told you a few weeks ago, about how I ran into my long lost dad in the grocery store?" The roommates nodded and then it clicked, "No! He looks so young Damn, Emma, you didn't say your dad was a hunk." Emma looked disgusted. "Come on! Really? Really? Did you really have to say it in front of me? Don't hit on him because that's just weird."
She decided she'd better intervene before anyone else decided to try and jump him. "Hey," she said, walking over to him. "You made it."

Conrad made a small wave and made his way toward Emma. "Happy Birthday, dear." He handed her the box with the ring inside. She was bound to have much more fun with her friends than with him there. Then again, Natalie had been 23 when he'd met her, or around that age. She'd brought out the concerned old man he'd grown into, as well as the adventurous young man he used to be.
There was a lot of Emma's mother in her, but a lot of himself. They looked as if they could be siblings and not father and daughter. It was something for the poor girl to adjust to. Meanwhile Conrad was just trying to get used to the fact that he had someone to carry on his name. His real name.
