Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Nephthys & Cocytus
WHEN: Thursday afternoon
WHERE: Around his offices
WHAT: Gods of lamentation, hopefully without so much of that.

So far, the return to New York for Nephthys had been a positive thing. She felt less clouded of mind and more gentle and she once again remembered that there was a life outside simply being Set's Wife, even if to many who knew their names that was all she was. Of her siblings, Nephthys was always the afterthought. She was Set's consort, and Isis' twin, and Osiris' sister. She was the shadow to her more famous family. She had accepted this as her lot now, but it meant that she built her world around her siblings, drawing from their strength what she herself lacked and clinging tightly to whichever one was closest.

So being away from Set hurt in an almost truly physical way, just as being with him brought pain of a different sort. She still wanted him more than anything in the world, and loved him just as fiercely as she had in Kemet.

She'd made herself a friend of sorts here, the Greek Eupheme, who was sweet and kind and shared no blood with her yet seemed to enjoy her presence none the less for that. It was novel and really very nice.

And she thought - for just a moment - that it was Eupheme she felt today. There was that touch of Greek to the presence but more overwhelming was the feeling of herself, as though someone held up a mirror against her. With a frown she stopped walking and looked around, sure the feeling was coming from inside the building behind her.

So Nephthys made her way inside.

Cocytus had a peaceful existence. He didn't mind as it reminded him much of the time he'd spend as an actual river. He took sorrows from mortals and made them feel lighter, and had a weekly dinner with his river siblings. Every so often he reported to the Underworld Lord, but that was less in Spring.

He could have it much worse.

When he felt the twinge of something that was fairly close to himself. He thought it was a river sibling, but it felt too distant. A parallel line.

Curious he rose from his chair and glanced outside, smiling to the goddess outside his office. It was a curious feeling and not one he often felt in return. "Hello," he gave a wave and walked to her. "This is...curious."

Nephthys looked at the man, the strange mirror-Greek, and tilted her head a little as she watched him, trying to decide what she felt. "Very curious," she said after a moment. "I must agree."

Smiling still he extended his hand. His assistant was out so he could be honest. "Cocytus. River of Lamentation." This would be amusing to figure out. Things similar to himself were always something he enjoyed meeting.

At his words Nephthys smiled a little, now understanding why he felt the way he did to her. "Nephthys," she said as she took his hand in greeting. "Goddess of Lamentation, among other things."

He couldn't help but laugh then, "well that explains everything then. No wonder you feel so similar." Shaking his head he released her hand and waved her into his office. "Please, sit down. This is a rare treat. Can I offer you anything?"

"No," Nephthys said with a shake of her head. "I simply couldn't ignore the feeling of one so like yet unlike myself. I was drawn, you might say." She smiled at him, bright and warm. "Tell me, where do you hail from? You feel perhaps Greek?"

He nodded, not feeling offended she didn't know him. His name wasn't as popular as some. "You would be right." smiling he sat down. "I am Greek. I belong to Hades. And yourself?"

Nephthys, like Cocytus, took no offense to being unknown. There were very few outside her own people who recognized her name when she spoke it. "Egypt," Nephthys told him. "Although I cannot say I truly belong to anyone beyond that other than myself." She couldn't help watching him curiously. "It is very strange for me to feel this in the presence of another god. I've met some that fit my other aspects but they do not evoke such familiar emotions in me."

"More the realm then the God. Not a bad sort, all in all." Shrugging he set his hands on the table, studying her with curiosity. It was so rare to find someone so close to him. "I must say I agree. I am only sorrow and lamentation though. It's fascinating, really."

After a few long moments more of watching him with a smile, Nephthys shook her head lightly. "I do hope that I have not disturbed you today from whatever it is you have been doing?"

He waved his hand, "no of course not. I have no patients for another few hours and I was just updating files. Nothing that can't wait."

"What is it you do?" Nephthys asked, looking around the offices for a moment before returning her gaze to him. "And you said 'river' before?" she said, her brows drawing together in question. "Are these the rivers of the underworld? These I have heard of, although it appears that by name I did not remember them."

He liked talking about his job. It was a familiar duty for him, "I'm a grief counselor. Whoever has suffered loss can come to me. It's good work." He nodded to her question. "Yes. I wasn't always man shaped. I could be, when it was required, but I preferred being a river. And as for the others there is me, Styx who is the river of Hate, Lethe who is the river of Forgetfulness, Acheron who is the river of Pain, and Phlegethon who is the river of Fire. My sisters Styx and Lethe are here. I haven't seen my brothers yet."

"I didn't even know that this was a job one could do," Nephthys admitted with surprise. "It sounds wonderful though, to be there at their hour of despair. I find the more time I spend among humanity, the more I wish to protect and hold it."

"How strange it must be," Nephthys said to him gently, "to have been a river and now to be a man. Has it been a long time for you?"

He nodded, "it is, surprisingly. The mortals have a profession for almost everything." He smiled, "well if you wish to study it I can give you some schools that teach this profession. Once you get used to some of the red tape it's quite nice."

Laughing he shrugged, "as river you are used to going with the flow. And it's been quite some time. I found legs after the middle ages. A little bit after I was a lake to the Christian Devil."

Nephthys first thought was but what about Set? Was she going to return to him eventually? Surely she must have been going to, because he was her husband and she loved him despite everything. But here this strange and familiar man was laying out another possible path in front of her and Nephthys said, "I would like that very much actually."

"I try to avoid the Christians," she said. "I'm sorry that you were drawn into their religion. So many are taken up by them. Even images of my own sister and her son were taken to serve their purpose."
