Who: Greed and Patience
What: Those durn Sins and Virtues colliding again. Greed is attempting a kidnap (does he even call it that?) and Patience makes a personal invite into Greed's business.
When: Monday late afternoon, 11 June 2012
Where: Park
Warnings: Language, assault
Collecting humans was starting to be a little bit of a hobby these days. It was like collecting Pez, and he'd gotten a handful of those too. After finding Wrath a human (or two--though he wasn't sure she got them all) to play with, Greed was still ready to have his own mortal to use as a toy. He was still diligently working on one, but she wasn't as easy as some of the dumb ones.
The streets of New York were also vastly different from Vegas. They had their nightlife which was as good as it was anywhere, but it was the day time that pulled out all the fruitcakes. Vegas was full of tourists and men with limitless pockets. New York had the trendy fashionistas (whom he thoroughly enjoyed as well), but also different languages and nationalities to pick from. There were so many, it just made him bubble over with excitement.
He bit down on his lip strolling past a few college aged girls on a bench. He was dressed down today, less suits and ties, but still the attractive nerd that college girls found stone-cold attractive. He whipped out his best smile, using the best come on line ever.
"Have you seen my dog?" He remembered to seem out of breath as if he'd been running all around the park. They looked sympathetic, looking around. "He's about this big," he motioned with his hands, then clamping his side as if it had cramped. "Puppy, just a little guy." He held up a broken leash. It wasn't the first time he'd used the ploy. The girls catered to him well, especially when he whipped out those doe-ball eyes and waterworks. "Help me look," he begged with his best lip quiver. He wasn't even sure what he'd do with these girls when he got them out of sight. He'd probably drag them home and keep them for days. Being clingy, letting Sloth have one (though he was too lazy to care), make pets out of them. The problem with all of Greed's pets is he suffocated them until they broke. Quite an easy mistake.
Patience walked quickly, coffee in hand, checking his phone. He was supposed to be at work in an hour, and he'd gotten all out of his way dealing with an old woman who used to keep nuisance dialing the police just for someone to talk to. He'd promised her he'd visit if she stopped attempting petty theft, and he kept his end of the deal every Monday.
He slowed his walk to the subway as he felt something pulling at him, and he looked around, trying to pinpoint it. There was a Sin somewhere close, exerting some of their power. Patience walked towards it, eyes searching every face until he spotted Greed by the bench. A couple of girls were getting up, looking around, as Greed pointed off in a direction he clearly intended them to go in.
"Hey excuse me!" Patience broke into a jog, then almost a run in his attempt to get to the bench before they left it. He realised he had no idea what Greed was calling himself these days, but he could wing it. "Are you looking for-" he noticed the broken lead dangling from Greed's grasp, "-your dog?"
Greed's teeth gritted tight, jaw protruding the side of his face as he grinded them back and forth. He could feel bile reach his throat as he swallowed it back down. A Virture. Not even his Virtue. If Patience butted into this there was no way he'd be able to take these girls anywhere.
His eyes lit, with a wide opened mouth as he tried to reply. Nothing came out. So Greed stood there with his mouth gaped open waiting for words to come out. FUCK!
Thankfully, the girl's came to his rescue which was enough for any Sin to cling to. "He's lost his little bull dog," one said, putting her hand on Greed's shoulder in which he closed his mouth and grinned wide with a nod.
He wanted to slap Patience with that leash until he bled.
"I think I saw it," Patience lied, jerking his thumb over his shoulder. He hoped the girls would just let them go without insisting on helping, but Greed was attractive and they may want to help just to try and get his number. "I don't mind helping you look."
"Oh did you? Where?" one of the girls asked, craning her neck as if the imaginary bulldog would be just sitting on the pavement behind Patience.
This was already going bad. Patience was about to take away his take-out! What kind of nasty job was that? He needed these girls. Just like Greed needed everything.
Finally, he felt his tongue move. Words actually came out. He was just prematurely stunted by Patience and that ugly face. Greed paraded his smile again, giving off the puppy eyes. It was a look that was very favorable, and difficult for anyone to say no to it. He pampered the girls with those silent pleas of his eyes.
"He wouldn't have gone that far," he countered. If anything Greed wanted their number too. At least he could make a house call if this turned sour. He broke down, pulling that distraught look. Tears. The girls wouldn't leave tears, even if he did sound like a dying parrot.
A chorus of "Aaawwww!!" made Patience inwardly roll his eyes as the girls crowded Greed to give him hugs and reassuring rubs on the back. Patience looked down at his feet and sighed.
"Nevertheless, I'm sure I saw a lost puppy a block or two that way," he said. "If we go now, we'll catch him. I don't mind helping. Please." He made eye-contact with one of the girls and widened his eyes slightly, trying to nod subtly at Greed and shake his head. She looked confused for a moment, then when Patience sighed and bit his lip worriedly, an idea seemed to dawn on her. She looked between them for a moment, then smiled like he was the cutest thing ever.
"It's okay, you should go with him," she said, nudging her friend and mouthing the word "GAY!" at her. Patience went red and tried to shake his head, which only compounded the effect. It wasn't exactly what he'd been aiming for, but it'd do if it got rid of them.
"Wait!" Greed pleaded, flopping himself dramatically onto the same bench they had been seated on. It didn't work. He looked to Patience with a grumpy face. This was NOT what he'd wanted.
He looked around the bench in a last ditch effort that they'd left something behind. They hadn't and by the time he looked back over to them they were gone.
Another flop onto the bench and he buried his face against the boards. "PATIENCE," he said in an aggravated groan. "You took my toys."
"People are not toys," Patience replied severely. He frowned in a schoolmasterly way at Greed. "You should not be abducting people on the street. Go home, there's nothing more for you to do today."
"Of course they are!" he replied with a prominent pout. "I was on a roll here! You interrupted!" Now he really felt like he was going to barf and all over Patience's shoes for just standing there. This was just gross. What was he going to tell Sloth now?
Sorry, I'd banked on getting through drive through with a pair of hot fries and a Virtue came and sneezed all over it? So, I come with no fries and no substitute. What kind of world did they live in?
Patience didn't roll his eyes, but he looked like he wanted to. "No. Go home, Greed." He should be on his way to work, but he didn't want to leave Greed there when he might do some damage to someone else just to spite him.
Greed pointed at Patience with his finger cocked like a pistol. "You can't tell me what to do!" He stood up straight. Greed wasn't about to leave empty-handed.
He stepped away from Patience. One foot. Second foot and paused putting his arm down. "We both know I can't leave this park empty-handed." He grinned wide, something akin to the Joker.
Patience sighed. "I am not going to let you take anyone else," he said, and sipped his coffee like he was not the least bit concerned. "I won't leave your side until you go home and give this up."
Greed laughed hysterically. "Well, that's just stupid. Me? Give up?" He laughed until his side hurt and he bent over to catch his breath. "That's a good one," he said waggling a finger, still leaned over at the waist.
Patience waited, unamused, until Greed was done. "You do remember who I am, don't you? I can do this all day."
"Don't you have somewhere else to be? Coffee in hand. Must be something important." Greed was just trying reverse psychology a bit. Maybe shoo Patience away long enough to at least grab a jogger or something. Someone interesting.
Patience just looked at Greed without speaking. If anyone was going to win a staring contest, it was going to be Patience. He gave nothing away, just watched, prepared to follow if Greed tried to leave.
"What are you going to be my personal shadow all day?" Greed snorted. "Because really, I'm not going home, Virtue." He pondered a moment. "What's your name these days anyway?"
A runner breezed past them, stopping by the old tree just a few feet from the bench to rest. Greed grinned.
"Freddie," Patience replied. "You?" He glanced at the runner, then back at Greed. "No I don't want any drugs! Don't make me have you arrested," he said loudly, so the runner and anyone else near would hear him. "And I mean that."
"Freddie? Like Kruger with claws and a stripped shirt?" He laughed again but twinged his lips into a thin line when Patience deferred his next would be victim. This was getting old. Fast. Greed had never been one at dealing with patience, let alone the Virtue itself. "Chance. That's mine." As if he had anything else to do but be a chit-chat now.
"YOU!" he shook his finger, whipping the broken dog leash on against a tree. "Fuck you Patience. You're ruining my day!"
Patience shrugged a shoulder. "No. Freddie like Mercury. And I don't care if I ruin your day, so long as you don't ruin anyone else's." He glanced that the leash, then back at Greed. "I'm warning you for a last time. Go. Home."
"No, Freddie like Mercury," Greed repeated in full playback with a snub of his nose and thrust of his hips that said 'fuck you'.
He swung the leash around in a circle, dangerously close to Patience. "Make me."
"Don't do this," Patience said, tutting and holding up a hand. "You're being very immature." Honestly. The Sins were so selfish it was absurd.
Greed swung the leash around a little faster, amused now that the Virtue told him to stop. Patience was more annoying the how Charity affected him.
"All I wanted was a mortal to take home and you ruined it. Now what am short a mortal and feeling better by the minute should I welt you across the face.
Patience straightened up. "I would advise against that," he said, glancing around to see if anybody was close. People tended to make themselves scarce around people swinging bits of leather at people's faces. "But I'm still not going to let you take anyone."
"You'd advise against anything that had your nuts in a vice." Greed dropped his arm after whipping the leash through the air in a defeatist attitude. "You're no fun. Taking my toys and then just being so....righteous. Gah!" he stuck out his tongue with a bitter taste, "so disgusting."
"So what you're just going to follow me home? Cause there's a lot of ground from here to the door." He pointed to his feet. Just when Patience turned in any direction to look, it's when Greed struck, throwing a fat welt against Patience's face.
He covered his mouth with a snort and a giggle. "Oops." His head cocked to the side as he looked at the handiwork. "You know, it actually makes that ugly mug look a little better." At that he broke out into a run.
If Patience was ever going to swear, now would have been the time. The pain across his face was sharp and sudden, and he let out a small sound of shock as Greed struck him. It missed his eye, but across his forehead and cheek the skin throbbed and bled.
And then Greed had to run. Patience gritted his teeth and took off after him, trying to plan the route ahead in his mind, but really had no idea which way Greed would go. He got his phone out of his pocket, keeping about 20 steps behind Greed so he could see which way he was going, in order to cut him off. "This is Fred Strong, I'm pursuing an assailant on foot, I need back up," he panted into the phone, dodging an old woman and a yorkie that yapped at him.
Greed didn't look jack, if he did he was sure Patience would catch up. After about four blocks he had to stop and catch his breath. He flopped against the side of a building, tossing the old leash to the side.
Maybe that would keep that stinky Virtue off his tail. He hated when they butter in, and that wasn't the first time Patience had shown up to spoil his plans.
He fished out his own cell phone, texting Sloth to say he'd lost the toys he'd planned to bring home.
Patience had dropped back a little, but kept Greed in sight. He felt relieved when Greed stopped, and jogged to a standstill in front of him, trying to pen him in. The cut on his face was dripping blood down his shirt, and his eye was tearing like crazy and swelling almost shut.
"Please do us both a favour and don't run again," Patience said, trying to control his breathing so he didn't pant too heavily. He just had to keep Greed occupied for another few minutes, until a car could reach them.
"Fuck!" Greed said throwing a hand to his chest. "Did you fly?" Were Virtues traveling with wings? Seeing that welt across Patience's face made him feel better inside. It was better than a child getting a puppy. Something about slowing down Patience made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
"Yeah, what'd I say Virtue. Can't make me..." those sirens bleeped a few times, red lights flashing as a car pulled up just in front of him. Greed shot a glare toward Patience with his bottom lip poked out.
"Really?"
"I work for the police," Patience said, straightening up to turn towards the approaching officers, while not letting Greed out of his sight. "Hi officers. Thanks for coming."
"Jesus, Freddie, he did that? Looks nasty," the male officer said, walking towards Greed with the cuffs out. "You're under arrest for assault, anything you say or do may be used against you in court. Get in the car."
The female officer picked up the discarded leash when Patience pointed it out, shaking her head. Patience looked at Greed and shook his head. "Told you. You can't hurt people."
All Greed could do was laugh as the lady officer cuffed him, not at all subtle in eying her. "You think cuffs are going to keep me down," he laughed as they manhandled him silent and towards the car.
"Inside, pretty boy," the female officer said not at all phased by Greed's attempt to get out of this.
"Really, this is a misunderstanding," he was still laughing.
Greed could have easily been angry, but the entire thing was amusing. For now. Once he was in jail and behind bars for a night he'd change his tune and start whining to be let out. He didn't do well inside cages. There was nothing for him to swipe.
"Nice face job," he poked at Patience. A hand was put on Greed's head as he was shoved into the back of the police car. Everything would be confiscated from him, including his phone. By the end of the night he'd be wailing to call Lust, Gluttony and Sloth.
Patience shook his head, disappointed. Give him a day or two to cool off, then he'll be less likely to reoffend too soon. Unless he did it again out of spite. He'd have to keep a close eye on him. Finally he let himself feel the pain in his face, wondering how far it was to the nearest medical centre. He'd have to make sure it got looked at. In the mean time, he joined the ride to the police station to book Greed in. He'd get his face looked at later.
