WHO: Demeter & Triton
WHEN: Monday afternoon
WHERE: A street in downtown Manhattan
WHAT: A chance meeting between aunt and nephew
WARNINGS: tba, likely nothing
Persephone was back in Demeter's life and the world was warm and bright once more. Demeter had made her amends to those that she'd wronged during her darkness and she had her daughter close to her. (The fact that Persephone would soon have to go was something that Demeter was choosing to not think about, too painful after all that had happened. But Demeter knew she wouldn't fight it this time. The cycles and rules had to be followed. They had all learned that lesson.)
Today Demeter stood outside an empty shop front, her healthy looks fully returned to her by now and her thick hair catching the breeze around her face. She felt the presence of another like herself and when she turned her heart tightened and her expression was one of fear. But it wasn't Poseidon as she'd first thought, but his son.
"Triton," she said to him with a small smile, her body already relaxing again.

Triton had been out to collect gifts for both his sisters and his girlfriend. He liked getting his Christmas shopping done very early, as somehow the zoo always turned busy around that holiday. Something about seeing all the animals in snow, he imagined.
He'd been thinking of one of the animals in his care when he'd felt the sensation of immortal and he'd caught the familiar figure. She looked very alike his mother and he'd paused. The fear he didn't even mind. He resembled his father quite a bit, he knew that.
So he smiled and gave the Olympian a bow as he'd been taught a lifetime ago. "Lady Demeter." He rose, stepping a bit closer and unconsciously appearing as nonthreatening as he could. "It's a pleasant surprise to see you here. I hope all is well?"

"All is well," Demeter agreed and then swept her eyes across him with a smile. "What a fine young man you've become," she told him. "The last time I saw you, you were still too young to be truly considered a man and now look at you." She didn't tell him that he had his father's looks, although he did. But he lacked that cruel twisting smile. It could have been said that Triton reminded her of her brother when the two of them had been innocent and happy together. Triton was a mirror of a possible path missed.

He gave an almost embarrassed smile to that. Unlike his father he didn't have that much vanity and it was odd to be remembered by someone besides his parents from when he was younger. "Thank you My Lady. My mother often tells me she turned around and looked back to suddenly notice I was half a foot taller then before."
He figured it wasn't what she meant but he felt it was nicer then saying how often he was told he resembled his father. And he knew that Demeter had felt his father's rages. So he felt he should be nice, show that not everyone of Poseidon's blood had that insanity in them. "May I get you something warm to drink?" Just in time he remembered not to mention autumn. He didn't think this was her favorite time.
Instead he motioned to a nearby coffee shop, "I could use something warm."

"Please, none of this 'My Lady', it's not necessary from you. We're family," she reminded him warmly. "Although I know I've not had much chance to show you that in the past. Perhaps now though, I could begin to make amends for that failure?" This wasn't Olympus and Triton wasn't ever in the sea now it appeared, somewhere Demeter would never willingly step. The ocean waters were a place she couldn't happily venture, the salt only killing all that grew on land. The boy - by all accounts she had heard - was not his father in any way.
Demeter looked toward where Triton had gestured and she nodded. "I'd like that. I'm in the area looking at buildings but I don't think a small break will do any harm."

Smiling he went to lead the way, "it is how I was raised, but if it pleases you I will stick to your name. And I would like that. I have met very few of my Aunts and Uncles. I enjoy getting to know family." Smiling he kept pace with her, opening the door for her and stepping into the building.
"What are you looking for?" He scoped out an empty table and set down his bags and his coat, before holding out his hands for her own coat. "Let me take that for you."

"Good," Demeter replied with a nod of her head that decided it. "Now with your father at a distance perhaps I can learn more of my nephew. Anyone I've asked will tell me you're nothing like him - which already is clear to me - and I've seen you argue with him over the blogs."
Demeter slipped off her coat as they reached the table - the need for them and the creeping darkness that came with it always one coming too soon - and sat. "I'm planning to open a restaurant, and this seems a good area. I've always enjoyed the whole process of feeding people."

Politly he hung up her coat before sitting down across from her. He had studied his history and knew that despite her promises she may be uncomfortable around him. He would not press on her. "I know little of that but this seems a good place. I'm sure you'll do well."
He shrugged, "I was raised by my mother. My father took very little interest in me until he could use me, then noticed I was nothing like him." With a smile he set his hands on the table. "And please, ask away. I don't have very many secrets."

"Poseidon has very little interest in anything he can't use for his own gain," Demeter said with clear distaste. She had no reason to hide her feelings on Poseidon from Triton. "Were it in my hands, he would have been removed long ago. I have no love for any of my brothers, your father least of all."
Demeter folded her hands in front of her, watching Triton with interest. "Tell me, what do you do with yourself?"

He decided not to comment, mostly because she was right. And partly because he felt no direct need to get into a talk that would discredit his father. Poseidon made his own reputation.
The second question was easier, "I'm a marine biologist. I work for the zoo. It's as close to home as I can get." He smiled, "My girlfriend works there as well, although in a different section. Other then that I keep myself occupied with looking after two of my half siblings. Raiden is from Japan, and new. She's interesting. My youngest brother Bernie reminds me a bit of myself, with a bit too much hero worship in regards to our father. Yourself?"

"You girlfriend, is she mortal?" Demeter asked, curious merely. She saw no problem with the gods taking mortal lovers of them own. On of Demeter's most adored had been her Iasion and he was a simple human. "A dangerous father figure for children to look up to," Demeter considered. "They're fortunate to have your kinder attentions."

He nodded, smiling, "she is. Wonderful though. Although I feel bad. I'm kept busy these days." He sighed, "the worst part is Raiden. Not the girl herself but she's...happy. Incredibly so. She is full of energy and nothing but smiles. The worst thing is her image of my father. She was taught he was a good king, one that would love and cherish her."
He shook his head, "and my father does love his challenges. I've put her under my protection, and I cannot get it through her head to be more careful."

Demeter shook her head a little regretfully. "Some can't see danger until it overtakes them." Demeter herself hadn't seen the threat growing within her brother until it was too late and he struck. Until then she had thought his moods would only be directed towards others.

"There is not seeing danger, and choosing not to see the danger." He shook his head again, "but I'm not here for that. I have endless discussions on that subject. Do you have anyone?"

Demeter for just a moment dropped her eyes but then met his again without sadness. "I have Persephone," Demeter told him, her pride in the young woman obvious from her tone. "I need no one else. And when she's-"
Demeter stopped herself there. Winter was coming and soon Persephone would be gone. Which meant that once again Demeter would have nothing but her own loneliness, and the terrifying threat of darkness hanging over her head if Hades didn't stick to the bargain. "I must find things to keep my thoughts during winter," she finally finished. Last winter she'd had sex with Poseidon above the corpse of a mortal who had done nothing to her. The monster she had been so recently must not return.

He had no idea what that was like, only part of it he could understand. "I think I know how you feel. I had a girl once. She was not long for this world. Oddly I don't blame Athena for it. Maybe I should." He sighed and shook his head. It had been a long time ago and he didn't like to think about that.
Smiling he offered her his card, "if you need company during the winter. I think Melanie would like you. I'm trying to introduce her to the less crazy parts of my family."

"There is nothing that stings more in this world than the lose of a child," Demeter smiled sympathetically. Demeter was fortunate in that all of her children had lived to adulthood, but even in Greece she'd had to lose her daughter every year.
"I'd like that," Demeter said to him with a warm smile. The idea of having others to care for and feed over the long winter was something that comforted her. It kept away the cold and the darkness to continue to be a mother without Persephone. "And I'm sure your Melanie would do well to have allies within the Olympians." The poor girl would need it with Poseidon around.

He nodded, "I've lost since then. It never gets easier." He loved all of his families but didn't often start one. Losing them was always hard, and getting left behind was painful.
"I agree with that." It would be good for Melnaie to have more support then his mother. He knew Amphitrite wasn't always available, and could not always protect his girlfriend. "Call me whenever. The zoo is less busy during the winter, and if you find your location I'd be happy to help you get it all cleaned up. I like keeping busy."
