Who: Pride & Sloth What: Hoity-toity party times When: Thursday evening Where: Metropolitan Museum of Art
Pride still wasn't sure exactly how good of an idea this was, but she was never one to back down. And perhaps this little event tonight would be beneficial for everyone involved. So, donning her brand new dress, she arrived at the Met fashionably late, flashing her invitation briefly at the doorman before sweeping inside. ' The place was filled with New York's elite, the rich and powerful, those who thought they owned and controlled the city. But oh, how wrong they were, and if she was good at one thing, it was knocking others down a peg while elevating herself. All that was left to do was wait for Sloth to arrive. She worked so much better with an audience.
modern_acedia 2012-03-21 01:57 am (local) (link) Sloth looked actually halfway decent, which made a change for him. He'd "borrowed" the dressiest suit in Mike's wardrobe. Not like Mike even bothered getting dressed any more. But, a shower and a shave and a suit and Sloth cleaned up pretty well, even if he did tend to slouch with his hands in his pockets, and he was wearing scruffy old Chucks.
He'd got the invite alright, but the doorman kind of gave him a look like he didn't belong, before sighing and waving Sloth through, suddenly unable to bother with raising a fuss. Sloth smirked and wandered in, looking around for Pride. She'd be somewhere with a lot of wine, he guessed, and looking amazing in black, as usual. He walked up to her, swiping a glass of bubbles on the way.
"Hey," he said with a sniff, giving her a brief smile of greeting. (Reply to this)(Thread)
superb_superbia 2012-03-21 02:15 am (local) (link) She looked him up and down, vaguely critical, but then again, when was she not? He cleaned up well enough for the evening, well enough so that he wouldn't embarrass her, and that was really all that mattered. And honestly, in an hour, no one would give two shits about his shoes.
"Hello," she greeted him, a tiny smile of her own playing around the corner of her mouth. "Some excellent prospects have just arrived, if you'd like to be introduced." (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
modern_acedia 2012-03-21 02:26 am (local) (link) Sloth sighed expansively, then shrugged. "Spose." He glanced around himself, wondering if he'd spot anyone interesting-looking. Pride did have excellent taste and a good judge of character. Sloth could tell those who would be particularly susceptible to his brand of charm, though. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
superb_superbia 2012-03-21 03:50 am (local) (link) "Well come along, then," she said, tucking her hand in his arm and leading him further into the room. "We'll never meet anyone just standing in a corner." She dodged drunk old men with wandering hands, trophy wives whose glares were positively poisonous, and society matrons wanting to fix up one or both of them with their terribly unappealing offspring.
The woman in question that she'd wanted to introduce Sloth to was standing in the corner by herself, nervously sipping a glass of champagne. "Amanda, darling," she greeted her, air-kissing her cheek. "You look lovely tonight. I don't believe you've met my brother?" (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
modern_acedia 2012-03-21 04:16 am (local) (link) Sloth nodded to Amanda, hunching his shoulders and looking her up and down. "Hi. Sylvester," he said, glancing at Pride. The girl wasn't very outgoing, but she was pretty enough. A bit boring for anyone else, but it might work for him, with a bit of pushing. He'd just been with a guy for so long that he'd have to adjust his thinking, that's all. Lazy women could go off sex altogether. Well, more frequently than men did, anyway. And they required more effort to get off. He tended to have shorter relationships with women. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
superb_superbia 2012-03-21 05:56 am (local) (link) Amanda was as shy a creature as Pride remembered, but as long as Sloth flattered her and showed a modicum of interest, she'd fall for him quickly. Pride could tell it wouldn't take a whole lot, the girl was timid and easily cowed.
"Pleasure to meet you," she was saying, as Pride pulled herself out of her musings. "I'm Amanda, like she said. Is this your first time at one of these soirees?"
Pride smirked into her champagne. She was fairly sure it was, unless Sloth had been keeping things from her. It was an unveiling for one of the museum's new exhibits, something about jade from China that she hadn't really paid attention too. But almost no one was there to see that, they came to drink and flirt and eat too many bad appetizers. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
modern_acedia 2012-03-21 06:38 am (local) (link) "Mmm," Sloth replied, sipping his drink. Amanda was smiling at him. Ugh. She felt a little too needy for his taste. Her insecurities would be too focused on him, rather than turning inward. As he glanced around again, he had to do a double take for a moment. A man stood sort of near one of the exhibits in the room, sipping a drink and looking like he was itching to get away from there. Sloth's brow twitched up, interest piqued. superb_superbia 2012-03-23 04:34 am (local) (link) Pride followed Sloth's gaze, her eyes falling on the man as well, who was clearly wishing he could be anywhere else but here. She ignored Amanda in favor of filling her brother in. "That's Dominic Sin," she said into his ear, loud enough to be heard but not overheard. "Ironic, no? His father and brother set this exhibition up, but this isn't really his scene, as I'm sure you could gather. He seems to be just your speed. And that's his brother, by that case of jewelry." She nodded in his direction. "That one's mine, I think." (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
modern_acedia 2012-03-23 04:43 am (local) (link) Sloth's glance flicked to the other one. Better-looking, but more ambitious. More Pride. He looked at her, one brow raised. He was glad there were two of them, because if it came down to it, Pride would fall before she gave up, and Sloth just couldn't be bothered with competition.
Ignoring Amanda's crestfallen expression, he walked away from her without a word, closer to the young man. "Are they rich then?" he asked, finishing his drink and swapping it for a new one from a passing waiter. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
superb_superbia 2012-03-23 04:56 am (local) (link) She nodded, keeping pace with him and refreshing her own drink. "Very," she confirmed. "Collectors and explorers, if memory serves. The sons are second-generation, and from what I remember, the father's very Old World. But they should be easy enough to ensnare. Most everyone is. A bit of flattery gets you everywhere." She leaned in to kiss his cheek, whispering, "Good hunting, darling," in his ear, before gliding off to speak with Andrew. (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
modern_acedia 2012-03-23 05:12 am (local) (link) Sloth glanced at her, then back at Dominic, sighing internally. Striking up conversations were such damn hard work. Well, if he wanted to get out before Mike turned to jelly, there was only one thing for it. He walked over, half an eye on Pride, and gave the guy a small smile and a quick up-and-down.
"Hi," he said, ignoring the case of jade next to them. "Nice suit." (Reply to this)(Parent) (Thread)
superb_superbia 2012-03-23 06:16 am (local) (link) Pride caught the opening of Sloth's conversation as she walked off, and managed an eyeroll that was sort of fond. Well, as fond as she ever managed, anyway. It wouldn't take much for Dominic to be under his thrall, and Andrew would be hers by weeks end. Sooner, if she did her job right.
"Andrew, don't you look handsome this evening," she said to him, flashing a perfect smile. She'd met him once before, just in passing, but she knew he'd remember her. Everyone did.
"Isabella," he said, kissing her hand. "You look ravishing, as always."
The smile remained in place, perfect and white. But she didn't thank him for the compliment. She never did that sort of thing. "Quite the display you've got here," she said instead. "Although both of our brothers don't seem all that interested in it."
