Poseidon hadn't been himself since returning from Greece, in fact he'd promised Amphitrite they'd take that trip to Hawaii by the end of the week just to get away. It wouldn't hide anything that had happened as Amphitrite was just as difficult to deal with in entirely different ways. He didn't like it at all, he wanted his fiery nymph back instead of this broken woman in front of him. It was a slap in the face is what it was, karma for all the things he'd done and should be held accountable for. Poseidon didn't take guilt for it, but for some reason right now the only thing he could think of doing instead of raging temper tantrums was opening Amphitrite back into the gem she was instead of this tarnished jewel he'd once had. Karma could quite frankly kiss his royal ass.
The secretary sat on the end of his desk, settling a cup of coffee in front of him which he refused. She was new as the one prior had skipped town after he'd thrown a glass paperweight through the door. She was just as attractive however, but he hardly noticed right now. "There's a gentleman here to see you," she said crossing her legs in that high slit skirt hoping he'd take notice.
"Send him in," he responded, standing up, letting his eyes rake over her body. He took the cup of coffee and put it back in her hands. "Take the rest of the day off, I'm leaving after this."
Hopping off the edge of the desk she straightened her skirt and walked out ushering the man inside.
Hephaestus had appeared at Poseidon's office at the appointemd time, and waited to be shown in. He nodded to the secretary and shut the door behind him, taking a seat across from his uncle. Poseidon had said he wanted a new ring for his wife, and in this instance, he was happy to oblige.
"Hello, Uncle," he said. "I believe you said you wanted a new ring for Amphitrite, is that right?"
His own wedding ring had been off his finger for a decade now at most times. It was the first time in that long that he'd actually put it on willingly. He and Amphitrite had grown apart in that length of time, since they'd lived in this cold city. Maybe it had changed him.
Straightening his tie, Poseidon took his seat as soon as Hephaestus came in. It was obvious the water god was unnerved, this time not out of rejection when Amphitrite had first left. He was rattled.
Taking a glass of water he focused back to his fellow Olympian. "Yes," he spoke gruffly. "I did," he said with a nod.
An obviously rattled Poseidon was not something Hephaestus was used to, his uncle was always so sure of himself. Why, he didn't know exactly, but he was fairly certain it had something to do with his wife.
"Before we get to that, uncle, are you alright?" he asked, trying to tread carefully and not provoke Poseidon's temper. "You seem troubled."
Poseidon wasn't used to these 'feelings' of regret if any, but something that had gone down in Greece had pushed his buttons.
Settling himself to meddling with paperwork he spoke, "I'm fine," was his stern reply, though he very obviously wanted to explode on someone. "Amphitrite is not," and that kept his temper raised. "All of Greece better be ecstatic I didn't throw it under water."
Familiar as he was with Poseidon's temper, Hephaestus decided not to press the issue. "As you say," he replied, sitting back in the chair. "And I'm sorry to hear Amphitrite is not well, I hope she recovers quickly."
"I'm sure they're very grateful," he said, slightly confused but deciding not to ask for details. He didn't want the rage in his uncle's voice unleashed on him. Time to steer the conversation back into safer waters.
"So, about this ring of yours," he said. "I saw the design you mentioned, I could certainly do something like that, or I could start over from scratch, whatever you would like best."
"The rest of 'em are buried under the Atlantic ocean," he said grimly, eyes cast off from Hephaestus' as if he were transfixed in a different state of mind. The change in conversation brought him back, though the pen he'd been holding was starting to grind itself into the desk.
"It needs to remind her of who she is." His eyes finally looking into Hephaestus'. "What do you have in mind." He knew Hephaestus' work, it was nothing short of perfection.
Hephaestus didn't want to know. There were things that were not his business, and he was simply better off knowing. His intuition told him this was one of those times.
"The shell design was lovely, I thought," he said, glad to be back on a safer subject. "Of course, I can customize it as much as you want, it's just a place to start. Is there a particular metal or stone that you wanted to use?"
"Good, we have a starting place. I trust you can be creative, if not then I've called the wrong man." He raised a brow, opening one of the drawers of his desk. Sliding across the desk he handed Hephaestus a jasper sea stone, a few for him to work with. "It's her color," he said in all seriousness.
"Creativity is said to be one of the things I do best," Hephaestus replied, not trying to sound arrogant, just agreeing. "I can draw up a few sketches, and you can pick the one you like best, if you'd like."
He picked up one of the stones, turning it over in his hand. It was highly polished, almost no flaws, it would look gorgeous in just about any setting. "And it is a beautiful color," he said. "I'm sure she wears it very well."
"It better be," Poseidon said in that dark tone. Poseidon wouldn't treat Hephaestus as nasty as his brother, but this wasn't anything to mess around with. Should Hephaestus want to keep on his better side, he'd agree with everything he said.
"She's a beautiful woman," his eyes cast to the side as he sat back in that expensive chair. "She deserves it." Some may think this was the act of a guilty conscious, but Poseidon adored that damn woman and he couldn't deny her anything right now. He could have very easily let her sit on her actions, the fact that she'd defied him, put him into this kind of position, but a part of him really couldn't.
