Who: Deirdre and Open
What: Walking the dog for distractions
When: Monday evening
Where: Random Dog Park
Warnings: TBD
Notes: Can you tell a day without interwebs made me want to write yet?
Deirdre had left the apartment in a bit of a huff, Gandalf barking at her heels. Everything had been pleasant and nice. With Gandalf, she felt less alone and she was making good inroads to being more social. Patrick was being friendly, and he hardly had to be, and then there was Perseus. Someone she considered rather attractive, but wasn't sure how to go about that. Last time she'd tricked someone into eloping with her, and she couldn't do that now. She'd been doing good by making a note to ask Briseis, simply because she was the only girl she knew and also Greek.
Then her mind had started spinning and she'd started to wonder when the other shoe was going to drop and before she knew it she'd been sad again. Being of the Sorrows could get irritating, especially because everything had been so long ago and all things considered she had it well enough. But she'd still gotten in a mood and she'd grabbed her dog's leash and walked outside. The cold wind made her focus on that, and the dog's eagerness to be outside made her forget her previous thoughts. this was why she was grateful she'd caved and bought the animal. Otherwise she'd just sulk for days and not leave her apartment.
When they came to the park she let the dog off his leash to go run around. She wasn't worried for the animal and despite the time not for herself either. The small dagger on her ankle was all she needed and she'd learned some things from the warriors she'd spend so much of her time with. With a sigh she sat down on the bench and tugged her coat closer before watching her dog with a smile. Already this was helping.

He wasn't Moritz, but the dog that Natalie was walking for her neighbour was even more exuberant than the Baron's hound. She was so used to the better behaved dog but this little terrier thing was dragging her around like it was twice the size.
It managed to slip free of its lead and bolt off across the park, even as Natalie gave chase. "Clark! Clark, get your butt back here!" But, no, the dog was now diving joyfully at the young woman sitting on the bench and Natalie groaned, coming running over. "So so sorry," she said, making a grab for Clark who decided this was a great game and wiggled his haunches as he avoided her hands. "Clark, dammit, you're getting mud on this lady!"

She was a bit surprised at the sudden presence of the small, but very hyper, dog and smiled at it before looking to the young woman in charge of him. "It's quite alright." she made sure Gandalf was alright before leaning down to pet the dog and use the moment to grab it's collar.
"Active little thing," this would help distract her further so she minded the presence even less. And a little mud had never harmed her before.

Natalie thanked the girl and snapped the lead back onto Clark's collar as he wriggled. "It's not even my dog but I thought since it was little it wouldn't be any trouble. Stop that!" she snapped at Clark as he started chewing on her watch.

She gave a soft smile and released the dog. "Yelling does little I've learned. Mostly they do not understand." She took the dog's collar and tugged on it. "No," she said sternly, hoping it would work. Then she offered her free hand to the young woman, "Deirdre."

"Natalie," she said with a warm smile, reaching out to take the offered hand and straightening up. "I've always loved the name Deirdre." Her best friend throughout primary school back in London had been a Irish girl by the name of Deirdre and it had ingratiated the name with Natalie.
The dog at her feet had settled somewhat at Natalie sighed down at him. "The only dog I ever have contact with usually is the best trained animal I've ever met, so I think I forgot that wasn't usual."

"Thank you," she did appreciate compliments at times. She smiled and released the dog. "IT takes time and practice. I can assume he's not yours?" Some dogs tested new people who walked them. She'd had the same issues with her own dog, but once he'd learned he'd been nothing but sweet.

"The little old lady in my building owns this beast," Natalie said, giving him a tight smile of warning that if he didn't behave he'd become sausages. "She broke her hip, so I thought I'd do my good deed for the year and take him out. I might pick a better good dead next year."
(Natalie kept finding the words you're really pretty on the tip of her tongue but that felt rather inappropriate to say to someone she just met and it would sound like she was hitting on her. But still, it was true: the girl was really pretty, almost impossibly lovely.)

She glanced to her Gandalf who had come over to sniff at the new person and the new dog. He seemed to be doing alright with the new animal so she picked up his toy and threw it for him to chase. "That would explain it. Most dogs are still pack animals, like I said. You're not his owner so he'll test you. That and he's probably sat still for a while and now needs to shed some energy. This park has a fence if you want to let him run a bit. He won't get out."
She smiled, "I had a litter of Irish Wolfhounds once. I got good at learning how to handle dogs."

I keep meaning to ask if Deirdre has an Irish accent?

Natalie considered the little terrier and then decided that this Deirdre was probably right and he needed to run around. She crouched and unclipped his lead before shooing him away. Clark happily sped off to chase the other dogs and Natalie hoped he wouldn't get eaten.
"I've never had much experience with dogs myself," Natalie admitted. "I've never been home enough for it to be fair for an animal and my parents were allergic."

She watched the dog, making sure to keep it in her vision. Then she smiled to Natalie, "what do you do, if I may ask, that requires you to be away from home so much?"
She'd always had animals with Leabarcham and Naoise. She'd enjoyed the added company and protection.

"I'm a pilot," Natalie smiled, because she couldn't help being happy when she remembered that she got paid to fly. Even the arseholes who hired her and the bureaucratic bullshit that she had to put up with on a daily basis couldn't spoil that. "I fly chartered flights, and so some weeks my apartment doesn't see me much at all."
"Can I ask," Natalie said with a questioning smile, "what part of Ireland you're from?"

She had to admit it was impressive, "that must be nice, being able to see a lot of new things. And it does explain it. I'm not a big fan of planes, so I salute your bravery."
She shook her head, "no it's no problem. I'm from a little town called Armagh in the Ulster province. It's very pretty there." She'd made sure to remember what the town where she'd grown was called now. Calling it what it used to be would be confusing. "And yourself, what is your place of birth?"

"Cars are more dangerous than planes," Natalie told her with a shake of her head at the bravery suggestion. It was more selfish than brave. Natalie just needed to be in the air above everything. "Hell, walking down the street in New York is more dangerous than flying, statistically speaking."
Natalie smiled. "I went through County Armagh with a school trip in college. It's a really beautiful area, even with all the Troubles going on. I'm from London, but I've been here in the States for ten years now."

She laughed, "you aren't the first to tell me this. It still does little to soothe my fears I'm afraid. I'm rather peculiar in that way." She just couldn't get the idea of it all to work in her head. She assumed it was because she'd been around when it all got started.
"It is," she nodded to the explanation. "Never been to London myself. Is it nice?"

"Yeah," Natalie laughed a little. "Those reassurances never work on anyone but I think we all still try them. Lots of people are scared of flying though, so you're not alone in that." Natalie was far more afraid of being trapped on the ground forever.
"It's a bit like New York's big brother?" Natalie suggested. "They're both huge busy cities - so if you like that they're great - but it makes me laugh a bit when people here point out something from the 1920's and talk about how old it is, you know? America's got such a short history compared to back home."

She nodded, "I can see that." Then she laughed, "yes it is truly odd." Not odder then being older then some of the cities in this country, but still odd enough. "And sometimes it lashes back at them." Smiling she took the ball from Gandalf and threw it again. "What else do you do besides fly to exotic destinations?"

"Not much really," Natalie said as she sat down on the bench. It seemed like she was going to be here for a little while now that Clark ran off. She might as well relax. "Pilots don't tend to have much social life - long unpredictable hours and being away," she explained.
With a light tilt of head to the blonde, Natalie asked, "what do you do?"

She frowned, "oh. I can't see that being easy." Despite her hermit tendencies she liked having others around her. She made a face to the question, "nothing. I'm still looking for something in between waiting for classes. There's not much going around and I fear I don't have a lot of qualities many look for in an employee." She shrugged, "I'm able to help get some of my countryfolk situated though and I have met the Irish Ambassador. I guess that's something."

"Meeting an ambassador is pretty cool," Natalie said with a nod of approval. (Because, in Natalie's mind, Ambassadors were something that was top secret and possibly somehow related to spies. She couldn't be entirely sure what they did and she wasn't going to ask.) "What are you studying?"

"A bit of everything," she smiled, "not very grand but I'm not sure what I really want to learn. I'm considering something with animals though. I've always loved taking care of them."
