Who: The Sphinx. Open to Jocasta and Oedipus
What: I am in your house, being a human eating monster
When: Wednesday
Where: Oedipus' shop
Warning: Mentions of people eating, Sphinx being somewhat creepy, probably mentions of incest

Sphinx rather liked her current arrangement she had with the cursed one. He fed her so she was less annoyed whenever he answered her riddles. And he let her have the youths that bothered him. The alley behind his shop was littered with the bodies of her prey. Let Oedipus deal with that. She cared that she was in a cool place and she could sleep for as long as she wished. Whatever the cursed one did when he wasn't here didn't matter to her. The only interest she had in him was in wanting to know how his bones would taste.

With a yawn she rolled off the counter and walked around the shop. Oedipus kept her clothes as clean as he could, and she only wore them because she'd lost her fur, but there was no hiding how different she was.she picked up one of the things Oedipus sold and toyed with it in her hands before she heard the bell signifying there was someone there. She walked to it, hoping for a meal. She was disappointed in seeing the cursed one, and a woman. "I never was, am always to be. No one ever saw me, nor ever will. And yet I am the confidence of all, To live and breath on this terrestrial ball. What am I?" She handed the statue to Oedipus and looked to the female, tipping her head, "I know you. You smell familiar. Immortal, not for Sphincter then. Cursed cursed one, never brings me treats."

She smiled and looked to Oedipus, "food."

Jocasta had been happily out with Rex all day and now the two of them returned to the shop together, arm in arm, Jocasta laughing at the story she'd just been told by Rex. All in all, everything was wonderful. Better than wonderful.

So of course it was all about to end horribly.

The woman approached the two of them and when she asked Jocasta a question, the once-queen paled, her eyes widening in fear. She could already feel the tingling of the creature's immortality and know, without question, who she was.

"Sphinx," she whispered in horror, barely audible. No, it wasn't allowed! This creature had ravaged her city once and brought her son into her bed! And worse than that, the Sphinx knew her of old. So frightened she was that she missed the meaning of 'cursed on'

Oedipus' arm un-looped from around Joanne's, that surge of nervousness hitting his whole body, the first time in weeks. He was about to push the Sphinx away, until Joanne spoke.

He froze.

Suddenly, no words would come to his head, his confidence was on shaky ground now because something was wrong.

He pointed to Joanne and the Sphinx. "Know each other?" he said, his voice a little more pitched than usual.

No, no, no. This was his imagination. This was his Freudian mind playing tricks on him. It was nothing. Joanne could be anyone. Anyone at all, so he ignored that bubble of fear that emerged in his stomach.

He wasn't answering her. He always answered her. That was what he did? Had he finally relented? Allowed himself his doom? She pushed the unease and fear aside, her fingers twitching.

He hadn't answered her.

With a snarl she went to jump on him, to dig her fingers around his throat. He knew the rules. Ask for a moment or answer the riddle. He hadn't done either.

He made a mistake, a near blunder as he saw that look on Sphinx's face. The way her fingers curled and she launched forward knocking him back. Oh god, her breath was rancid, like a lake of blood on her tongue. His hands gripped her wrists, holding her back so that he could quickly throw out an answer.

His tongue may have felt twisted around in his mouth but he had to think and quick.

"Tomorrow or the future!" he managed out his voice a squeak and his eyes shut tightly. He could feel those claws ready to dig in. Oh gods, he didn't want to die.

She hissed, but she stopped struggling against him. Instead she drew back, her teeth bared. "Close. One day I will taste your blood, cursed king. One day." It was only then and not a moment sooner she realized the other questions posed to her.

And really, this would be her vengeance. "I know her Oedipus. I sat upon her gates, mad her city my lair. Then you came." She huffed. She'd never forgive him for that. "She was the prize." She rose to her feet and circled the woman, "this is familiar isn't it? I asked you once if you ever regretted answering my riddle cursed one."

She grinned at Oedipus, "now I ask again. Next time you hesitate, maybe you would keep your mouth shut. I told you, your curse will come back."

"No," Jocasta begged quietly as she took steps away from the both of them, shaking her head in horror. "No, this isn't true, this isn't true!" She looked at Rex, tearful and terrified. "It isn't true! You're not- No!"

He scrambled to get out from under Sphinx, his ears already burning from what she spoke of. He backed himself against the storefront counter, feeling his head spin a few times.

His name rang through his ears like a siren going off. All he was missing were the big flashing red signs, but there it was in the form of Joanne---or---Jocasta more like. That name was as terrifying as his own. He felt his stomach turn a few knots, ripping at every inch of him. He told himself he'd never go through this again. He'd learned his lesson. He'd never step foot into this situation again because it was fucked up.

Love, hate, remorse, regret, disgust, shock, it all wrapped itself up into this knot in his throat and he just covered his ears as if they were bleeding, shutting his eyes tightly. He counted to three and when he opened his eyes again no one would be there. It would be some big fanciful dream that his Freudian mind had cooked up just to laugh at him.

He opened one eye and saw Jocasta standing there in tears, shaking, pleading.

He couldn't give her the answer she wanted to hear. He couldn't give her the answer he wanted to say.

"Oedipus." He said finally in a defeated breath. "My name is Oedipus."

There, the trumpets could sound.

She watched the two. Oh now this was glorious. Vengeance. For defeat, for being denied her rightful dues. She looked to the woman, "Sphinx gains nothing by lying." she looked to Oedipus and laughed, "regretting answering yet?"

Myth had changed him. Mortals had changed him. He would always regret what he'd done, despite how common it was within the Greek Pantheon, and the taste of wrong would always remain.

One day it would drive him into her claws and she'd have her prize.

"I think we're aware cursed one. Humans. So entertaining. Gods smile upon Sphinx this day." Truly this was rather fun to watch.

Jocasta couldn't hear anything the Sphinx said. She could only hear her son admitting who he was. Her cry was muffled behind her hand but it was a helpless sound of horror and agony.

Still she wanted to beg for this not to be true, but she knew it was. She should have known but she'd been blinded by it all.

She ran then, almost falling over herself in her hurry to be out the door. Jocasta didn't know where she was running to but she knew she couldn't stop until she was far from her mistake.

Oedipus took a deep breath, his hands moving off his ears to hear that sound of a chorus in his head. They spoke of things he already knew, reading the line from a story that he often wished wasn't his own.

When he focused on who spoke he saw the Sphinx, laughing at him with that grin. That malicious grin that he remembered from the first time. He stood up tripping over himself just as Jocasta sailed out of the shop.

The gods could be forgiving with themselves, taking and choosing who they wished, but in the mortal world it wasn't allowed. The rug was always going to be pulled out from under him.

The sad part was he'd actually loved Jocasta and now his tormented and mixed up head couldn't focus. His eyes felt wet.
