WHO: Tinsel, Henry, a bit of Erato
WHEN: Friday Nov 10th, evening
WHERE: Tinsel's office
WHAT: The guilt is eating Tinsel up because she got eaten out
WARNINGS: mild sex talk

Halloween was the last event on the Calendar that was a real competitor for Christmas, and it was after that that work really ramped up for Tinsel. Thanksgiving hardly rated when she had so much to do to make sure Christmas happened. Some of the people in the office had little fake pumpkins and skeletons decorating their workstations, bringing the Spooky Season into this bastion of Yule festivities.

Trick or Treating in Manhattan was difficult for people in apartments. A lot of people had little bowls of candy out on their desks. Tinsel encouraged people to wear costumes if they wanted to, and on the 31st there were a good number of spooky characters. Tinsel didn’t dress up. She had so much to do already to deal with leaving her office and joining everyone else in their Halloween staff lunch.

Amber, her assistant, knocked on her office door and poked her head in. She had a plate of food and a witch’s hat, which she held up with a smile. “Brought you a costume,” she said, coming in and placing down the plate. “I saw you working through lunch again so I brought you some food. You need to eat something. It’s good, the cupcakes are frosted with little spider webs. Cute, huh?”

Tinsel thanked her with a smile and a sigh. Her phone buzzed as Amber went back to the rest of the party, and she glanced at the screen, and then turned it over. Julia. She was checking in on their plans for the night. Tinsel was already starting to tell her she was busy with her ever-increasing workload a little more often than she should. And she was busy, it was just- she could make time if she really wanted to, and she knew it.

The problem, which she had not discussed with anyone else, was that Julia wanted more from Tinsel than Tinsel was able or willing to give. Julia had said those three little words, and Tinsel could not find it in herself to say them back; she knew that meant things weren’t working, but Julia was so- so… so invested. And so sweet and caring, and Tinsel didn’t want to hurt her. So she pulled back each time Julia tried to move closer, unconsciously or not trying to bridge the gap.

Absolutely swamped, I’m so sorry hon xxxx Have fun without me tho!!

Tinsel picked up a bottle of wine on her way home. It was actually one of the good bottles for tonight, she’d thought to treat herself as she sat inside in her Stitch onesie and watched Downton Abbey instead of going out with her girlfriend, like she should want to be doing.

She rubbed her temple tiredly as she headed into the lift. She’d been up before dawn to get a workout in before going to the office, focused on keeping her body fit to keep up with the long hours. And now it was dark, and she felt like she’d hardly seen the day. With an exhausted sigh, she closed her eyes.

A scent filled her nostrils and she gasped softly, sucking it in. It was like a sunbeam between storm clouds, a warm springtime morning after a freezing winter. The smell was fresh and floral and sweetly feminine, making her breath it in deeply and open her eyes again, suddenly refreshed.

It was her downstairs neighbour. The slim woman had her red hair in delicious curls tumbling down her back, over a short gauzy white dress made to look weathered and torn. Jasmine was adjusting her cape, and caught Tinsel’s wondering gaze, giving her a perfectly kissable smile.

Tinsel knew she was a Muse, and Luna’s friend. But she’d spent more than one night since they met fantasizing about a moment just like this one, and that fact didn’t seem important to remember. Nor was the fact that she was meant to be in a committed relationship. She would feel somewhat guilty about that later.

“Hello. Happy Halloween,” Jasmine said, fluffing out her skirt. “I like your hat.”

Tinsel had forgotten she was still wearing the witch hat she’d been given, and she raised a hand to touch it. “Th- thanks. Uh. I like your costume.”

“Oh- sexy ghost, you know, in the great Halloween tradition.” Jasmine laughed a silvery laugh, and gestured to the back on Tinsel’s arm. “Where are you going with that wine? Somewhere special?”

Tinsel bit her lip, and shook her head. “Nah. Just me and a box of shortbread and a TV binge watch. Long day at work.”

Jasmine smiled sympathetically, and reached out, brushing her fingers against the back of Tinsel’s arm, making all the hairs stand on end. “Well, Tinsel Gloria, I have this new herbal tea that would help to energise you, if you want to come try it? My party is over, I have nothing left to do but get into my pajamas too, and you know-” She leaned in close, conspiratorial. “I am not quite ready to stop enjoying my costume. Do you think that would be something you might like?”

Tinsel felt stupid with the enchanting scent and the closeness. She was just going to have tea with her neighbour. There was no harm in that. None at all. Maybe she could share her wine, too. And Jasmine had remembered to call her Gloria, which- Well, why must she always be the responsible one? It was just tea.

Reader, it was not just tea.

“Tinsel? Are you- did you sleep here?”

Amber was in her office, looking at her in concern, and Tinsel looked up from her coffee, sagging on her elbow on the desk. It was sweet that Amber cared. The whole office cared, but so long as Tinsel just focused on her work, she could put her energy into making Christmas bright for those in need, and not hitting her girlfriend with a metaphorical sack of coal. She could convince herself she could forget it and move on. And maybe that meant she didn’t go home and face her apartment and shame.

“Do you need to call someone?”

“Hm?” Amber was still talking to her, and Tinsel rallied to give her a smile, sitting up straighter. “No, no I’m fine, we have joy and goodwill to spread and only forty-four days to do it in. Back to work!”

Amber hesitated, but eventually she left the office, although she did come back with an orange juice and a croissant. Amber also, at the end of the day and fearing another late night from her boss, took the opportunity of having access to Tinsel’s phone to send a message to her brother, asking him to come by at his earliest convenience. Sometimes workaholics were their own worst enemies, and Amber could at least provide a friend to chisel Tinsel out of her office.

Henry had received the message near the end of dinner, and left a double date because if Tinsel needed help, he was going to give it. He was dropped off by the Uber and he sort of walkran into the family's office building.

He saluted Amber as he passed her, and then he went to knock on Tinsel's doorframe, before leaning up against it, trying to look a little chill and not terribly worried. "Hey, Tinse," he said gently. "Everything okay?"

Tinsel looked up from her computer, frowning at being interrupted and confused as to why Henry was standing in her doorway.

"Heeeey... yyyyeah, you?" she asked slowly, looking Henry up and down. "You're dressed nice. Is something up?" She put a hand to the messy hair thrown into a bun on her head, worming a finger in to scratch an elusive itchy spot.

Henry smiled and leaned up off the doorway, moving inside the office so he could maybe try for a hug. "Was out for dinner, thought I'd drop by," he said in an enigmatic fashion. "How long have you been in the office, Tinse?" Henry cast an eye around the place for signs she'd been camping out.

"Long hours this time of year," Tinsel replied, still confused- and her gaze flicked out to her assistant's desk when Amber got up. The crease of confusion instantly flattened as she realised what had happened. "I'm fine," she said with more conviction, and she raised her voice for Amber's benefit. "I said I was fine!"

Amber came over and gave Henry a smile. "Ask her why she slept in her office last night," she said. "Nice to see you again. I'm going home, Tinsel, I'll see you Monday. Good night!" She waved and Tinsel rolled her eyes and sighed heavily.

"Okay, very long hours, then," she said grumpily, not bothering to try and lie.

"Night, Amber!" Henry called out cheerfully. Then he turned to his sister and he extended a hand to her. "Right, come on. Up out of the chair. You did this for me so many times, and now I am doing it for you." Of course he had been glued to the sofa playing video games and smoking weed, not working, but tomato, tomahto. "I am taking you home, making you something to eat, and you are going to rest. Now."

"But I-" Tinsel actually was halfway through writing an email, but she'd been halfway through writing it for a while, her brain whirring as she looked blankly at the screen. She exhaled tiredly, giving up the fight. "Okay, fine," she sighed, shutting off the computer and getting up, and picking up her bag to hang from Henry's outstretched hand.

There were still a few residual Halloween decorations in the lobby of her building, and Tinsel screwed up her nose at them. "When are they gonna clean those up?" she grumbled, striding straight for the elevator and hitting the door close button as soon as Henry was in. Not because she was avoiding someone, of course.

Henry glanced around at the decorations and he shrugged. "I dunno, I think they're cute. Anyway, we have Christmas decorations up all year so I don't think we have a leg to stand on," he said as the elevator closed. "And food requests?"

There was a pause, and then Tinsel said, "huh? Food? Oh... whatever." She looked up at the ceiling, her arms crossed in a defensive way, shifting her weight on her feet. She wasn't comfortable until she was inside her apartment, and didn't wait for Henry before she went to her fridge to find a bottle of wine to slosh into a glass. She left the bottle out on the bench and went to the living room to flop down on the sofa with a heavy sigh. She could feel a tension headache building behind her eyes.

Henry was concerned, but he followed her into the apartment at a slower pace. He had already eaten, so he shot off an order for pizza because it was easy and he knew what she liked, and then he went to join her in the lounge.

"Tinse," he said gently, as he took a seat. "I can tell something's wrong. You can talk to me, you know?"

Tinsel let her head fall back against the sofa looked upwards at the ceiling. She could try and lie, brush him off, say it was exhaustion and stress and a heavy workload, but... this thing was eating her up and she had no idea who to talk to. She needed someone who wasn't going to judge her, and she wasn't really confident she would find that person. At least Henry had been through things. She'd dragged Henry out of the gutter, maybe he'd keep his judgement quiet.

"I messed up," she said flatly, not looking at Henry. "And I don't know what to do."

Well if anyone understood messing up, it was Henry. "Well I'm here if you want to tell me about it," he offered quietly. "Maybe we can work out what to do together? Or I can just listen if you want." If she would rather just blob out and watch something and sit together he could do that too. He just wanted to be there for her.

Tinsel chewed her bottom lip as she thought it over, tapping her fingers against the wine glass.

"Do you remember Jasmine from downstairs? She invited me in for tea late at night on Halloween. She was being... flirty... and..." She trailed off, uncomfortable at the memory. "And I- um- went along with it." Sitting up, she put the wine glass on the table and covered her face with her hands, having to physically react to the memory to be able to deal with it. "I slept with her," she mumbled from behind her hands, needing to expel the words like a toxin. "And it was amazing. And I feel guilty for thinking it was so good, on top of the guilt for- for messing up." Saying the word cheating out loud was hard.

"Oh, Tinse," Henry said gently. He didn't agree with cheating, but he wasn't going to judge her for it. "Hey, come here," he said, opening his arms to her so she could lean into them. "That's so hard."

Tinsel looked at Henry, her brow creased with distress. "Didn't you hear me? I really stuffed up, Henry. You shouldn't be hugging me, you should be hating me! After how hurt I was by what Clementine did to me, I go and do the same thing to someone else?" She groaned, agonised by her terrible choices, and bunched her fists into her hair. As much as she wanted to be comforted, she knew she didn't deserve it. Bending forward so her forehead was almost on her knees, she wailed, "I deserve coal for Christmas, naughty list for sure."

"No, hey," Henry reached out to rub her back gently. "Tinse. I could never hate you. Never ever. You made a mistake, okay?" Yes, she had stuffed up, but that hardly made her naughty list material. It just made her human. "You know I would be able to see if you belonged on the naughty list and it's all Nice List from here."

Tinsel groaned again. Henry being nice was almost worse, after how much she had been beating herself up all week. Propping herself on her elbows, she leaned her eyes on the backs of her hands. "This suuuucks," she moaned. "This is so not me, I don't understand it- why am I so stupid?? "

"You're not stupid," Henry said, his voice still gentle. "Why don't we talk it out? How were you feeling? What happened exactly?" He wanted to ask if Julia knew, but he would wait. He wanted to understand how this had happened first.

Tinsel huffed out a breath. Where did she start? "What happened was- what happened- I guess what happened is I got into an elevator with a literal goddess, like, and she- it was like I was in a fog, I couldn't think straight cos she was so beautiful-" She sighed, and continued, her voice low. "And... also... it could be that Julia said she loves me and I didn't say it back."

"So," Henry played with the hem of his shirt for a moment, though he didn't stop rubbing Tinsel's back with his other hand, "so those are two separate things." He took a breath and said, "so I'm just going to focus on one here. When Julia said that...did you want to say it back, Tinse?"

Tinsel clenched her jaw. "Sure, I wanted to. Would have loved to have been able to. But I- I couldn't. And I'm not a liar." She dropped her hands tired and reached for her wine, taking a long drink. Her throat felt dry and an ache was developing behind her eyes. "Sometimes being around her is stifling. She wants... more than I have for her. And I wish I could give it, I really, really do. She deserves better."

Ah. "It's not that she deserves better, sis. You're incredible. It's just sometimes it doesn't work out." Henry patted her back and then turned so he could face her better. "It sounds like you were starting to realise you wanted something different. There's nothing wrong with that."

"Except that now I cheated on her and made everything ten times worse," Tinsel burst out, clenching her fists. "I'm supposed to be a leader, I'm supposed to set an example, and I stuffed it! How could I- how could I- have done this? I know how much it hurts and I still did it. I'm no better than an actual lump of coal. I should be fired on sight."

"Of course you shouldn't!" Henry said, actually surprised Tinsel thought this meant she should be fired. "You made a mistake but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have the position you do. You've been working for that your whole life. This is just a setback."

"You don't even know the worst part," Tinsel wailed, covering her face with embarrassment. She didn't want to tell it, but everything had to be aired now, didn't it? It would be clogging her up until she expelled it all.

She shook her head and sighed. "I- I went back," she admitted shamefully. "I couldn't stop thinking about her and her hair and her- her everything- I went back thinking something had sparked between us. God, what an utter idiot I am." She couldn't even bring herself to look at her brother. "I went there all dressed up and... she had someone there, this man who answered the door, and they were clearly about to- She came over and asked if I could come back another time, and I just- I ran away. It was like an ice bath all at once, and I've never felt so stupid in my life. Never ever."

His poor sister. Henry kind of wanted to tell off this Jasmine, but honestly, the gods and goddesses were all on another planet. This was just the shit they did.

"You're not an idiot for hoping," Henry soothed her. "Which goddess is Jasmine again? Because there's a chance that hope is just...you know...something she does?" Some of the gods had weird powers. Maybe this Jasmine's was adoration or something.
