Avery looked around in mild surprise as Lyra returned home and wrapped herself around his shoulders. "Hello," he said, looking sideways at her. She'd been drinking, obviously, because it was Wednesday (where had she got booze money from? Seriously? After Christmas?) and because he could smell it on her. "Been having fun, have you?"
He did sometimes feel a bit jealous that Lyra had so much fun without him. She didn't even try that hard to convince him to join her, if ever, anymore. But he'd convinced himself he'd rather be home alone anyway so it was a waste of time feeling jealous about anything.
