Sleep was light that night. Every time Henry jerked awake from a nightmare, Iestyn woke up, hazy with exhaustion, and just stayed still for long enough that eventually he slipped under again. He kept thinking he heard Addy saying his name, and wasn’t sure if he was awake or dreaming. But she wasn’t here, she was in the hospital, where she needed to be to get better, and Evie was with Tuck and Will. One of the cats jumped on the bed and lay against his legs for a while, and he just closed his eyes and let the movement of her washing herself and purring soothe him until they both went to sleep.
Gradually, Iestyn became aware of the sound of water running, and then a chill went through him that woke him up properly. Was that the sound of crying? Who was crying? He lifted his head and blinked in the semi-darkness of dawn, straining his ears. Henry?
He carefully moved his leg from underneath the cat and got up, stumbling towards the ensuite door and trying it to see if it was locked. “Henry?” he called gently.
