"I saw a deer one time." The memory came upon her of a sudden as Cathal spoke about wildlife in the city. She hadn't thought about it in years, maybe only a couple times since it'd happened. "Super weird. It was in Forest Park—'bout a half hour away from us—real early morning. I'm walking the trail, come up over the hill and it's just standing there in the middle of the path. Looked at me for a second and booked it. I legit thought I imagined it till it was on the news that night. They didn't know how it ended up there; it woulda had to've crossed a whole lot of major roads."
And Rosario remembered something else as she recounted it: the deer was the animal of Artemis. Apollo's twin; her aunt. It might not mean anything. A weird improbability could just be a weird improbability, they happened all the time. But her own damn words were still fresh in her ears: Kinda makes you wonder what other stuff we all missing on the everyday. Goddammit.
She tried to shrug off the discomforting thought with a crooked smile and a joke. "Guess it's like Jeff Goldblum always told us. 'Life, uh, finds a way.'" The impression, she realised too late, was a mistake. She sounded nothing like Jeff and a lot like an idiot.
