She tries, for Lyra, to wrestle the anxious line of her mouth into a smile. It's an almost passable effort. But the fear is still there, an ache in the base of her throat, and she's thinking how I'm not gonna try ain't the same thing as I'm not gonna. She's thinking there's a lotta things Lyra never set out to do, didn't preclude her from getting swept up in events. And how do you save somebody from a monster that can get in your brain, stop you from even seeing what's happening in front of you?
"I saw the crow again." Rosario feels like she's gonna choke on the admission, but once she's worked the words loose they fall out in a rush. She squeezes Lyra's hand tight.
