Mary didn't want to say 'that's my job' as it made it sound as though listening to his agonies had been a trial she'd forced herself through for credit with the Lord Above but... well, it was sort of her job. She existed to hear the prayers of human beings and do what she could to ease their suffering. Usually it wasn't much. She couldn't actually intercede with God, no matter how much they begged her. But she could listen to Nicholas' troubles and be a supportive pillar.
Though right now she felt a little like that pillar was cracked. She would rebuild it, but currently it was precarious.
"You're such a good man, Nicholas," she told him. "Don't you ever forget that." Lust had tried to make him forget that, just as she'd tried to make Much forget it. Lust was like that, and there was little Mary could do about it but be there for the aftermath.
