Nicholas had been putting the last things together on the burger and Mary's salad so it would be ready when the curly fries came up. When Mary broke down, Nicholas abandoned the food altogether and went to stand in front of her. "Oh, Mary," he said, leaning in so he could wrap his arms around her again.
When he had first been around her, seeing her break down would have really shattered his view of her. She had pulled him out of the darkest place, and he had had her up on a pedestal so high- But that was years ago, and now Mary had become a friend instead of some symbol. Sure she was two thousand years old, but people were people. "I'm here," he reassured her, bending his head to kiss her hair. "You're home now. You're safe. What happened?"
