Marian didn't like to think about what might have happened if he'd gotten hold of her then, instead of Elaine opening that portal. The boys all knew that Robin had chucked her and that she was leaving. Maybe she would still be with the Sheriff now, no one even thinking to look for her at all.
It was a chilling thing to consider. Who would she be now, after literal years with the Sheriff?
But instead she'd been swept up and turned into a hawk and guided and helped and remembered that she was needed by people. Lancelot was part of that. Lancelot and Elaine had made her strong enough to come back and demand that Robin speak to her, and to demand her place back among the family no matter what he thought of it.
