The lead up to Thomas' trial had been one horrible blow after another. After being questioned for days, Thomas had been charged and transferred to Riker's Island to await his court date. Bail had been denied, and as a murder suspect, he wasn't allowed visits from friends or family. The last time he had even seen his son had been that terrible night Lena had died.
When his trial finally started, he was led into the courtroom and he spotted his family sitting there behind the defendant's table. He felt a rush of emotion for everything he had been through in the past several months. He still couldn't believe they had ended up here, but surely he would be found not guilty. He never would have hurt Lena and there was no evidence. Hoping the system wouldn't fail him might have seemed stupid, but it was all he had.
Even though he knew he wasn't supposed to, Thomas turned around in his chair and smiled wearily at his son. He was glad he was dressed in a suit instead of his jail jumpsuit. Jamie didn't need to see that. "Hey," he whispered to his family. "Hi. Uhm. Been a while." He reached a hand out to Jamie and tried to look brave. "Have you been okay, Jamie?"
