Thomas gazed up at Jamie as his son held his sock-covered hand, and he seemed to relax. Lena lamented how thin Thomas' arm was. She remembered, back when Thomas had been well, they had joked about how skinny he was. Back then, however, he had been healthy and now he was nothing but bones, overly large joints, and sallow skin. His cheeks were hollow and she hated seeing him like this.
They wee interrupted by a doctor who entered the room, looking incredibly serious. Lena raised her eyebrows at the man. "Hi. Is there news?"
"I need to speak to Jameson," the doctor informed Lena, and immediately her heart clenched up. She knew Jamie was Thomas' medical proxy and she had never challenged that, even after she had married Thomas. But if this doctor wanted to speak to Jamie now, that was a very bad sign.
