Warning Staas' mouth, as always
Staas busied himself around the apartment, cleaning and tidying. Ira was due to come over soon, and he didn't want the man to be surrounded by the detritus and clutter that usually took up residence in his apartment. He'd put most of the toys away, had made sure the kitchen and sink were clear of dishes, and was now running a duster over all the surfaces in the livingroom. He'd got the small entertainment center, the ceiling fan, and now he was getting the bookshelf.
It was a motly collection of books. A lot of Stephen King, a few classics, a lot of children's books (including the entire A.A. Milne collection) and a couple of photo albums. On top of those albums, and in front of some of the books, were framed pictures. There were also pictures lining the high counter separating the livingroom from the kitchen. Shots of the kids, with and without Staas, with each other and alone. There were two included among them, one of each of the children with their mothers. There was a tiny, screaming, wrinkly newborn Theo with a dark-haired, sweaty, tired woman. And next to it, a one-year old blonde baby in a dress with a happy, smiling, blonde woman in a t-shirt. Staas kept those pictures, displayed them proudly, for the sake of his children. They both knew they had different mommies, knew neither woman had been healthy or capable of taking care of them. They knew they were loved fiercely by their father, who never let them forget it, not even for a day.
There were lots of other pictures as well. Shots of Staas, in different stages of life, with his mother and one with his grandparents when he was seven years old. There was one of Staas on stage, sweaty and lost to the music, as he stood with another young man, playing their guitars to each other and grinning. That same guy appeared in another frame, younger--fifteen or so--with his arm around Staas' shoulders, their hips bumping as they smiled at the camera, and another of him grinning, older now, twenty-one and thinner, his eyes dancing as he pointed a finger at the picture-taker.
Staas dusted everything off and put the cleaning supplies away, then washed his hands. He went to the refrigerator, and pulled out the yellow box he'd picked up earlier from Candi's. He set the pastry selection out on the counter to warm up a bit, and wondered if Ira would even want to stay for the treat.
The quieter, more stoic man was really the first real friend Staas had managed to make in Nearside, and though he wasn't Staas' normal type of friend, he was certainly proving to be good company. Not to mention good with the kids and quite amusing to Staas. He oddly found himself a bit nervous. Perhaps it was because he knew the subject of his children wouldn't be far off. Far from hating the subject, Staas just wasn't sure how it would be received. Ira seemed to be a bit old-fashioned, and the last thing he wanted was anyone thinking badly of his children, just because of their mothers. More importantly, he didn't want anyone treating his relationship with Alida differently once word spread that she wasn't biologically his.
Because she was his. In every way that mattered.
He wiped his hands on the sides of his jeans and bounced on his toes. Coffee and pastries after the fitting. And obviously conversation.
He licked his lips, then checked on the kids, who were happily coloring at the table.
