Key Issacs was ready to leave much sooner than he had hoped. On average he did not put much time into getting ready, more often than not he spent two minutes stumbling around his apartment, grabbing at pants and shirts before he tripped out of the door and to work but tonight was different. Dae had invited him to dinner, their first time spending any time together since they had gotten married. How messed up was that? He was supposed to be there by eight but by five o'clock, he was ready to go.
For over an hour he had been sitting on his couch, drumming his fingers on the his leg, staring at the clock on his wall. Before that he had been pacing around, rearranging things and picking up the pieces of clothing that had somehow ended up thrown all over his apartment. All the time counting down the minutes until eight o'clock, trying to decide if it would be okay for him to show up early or not. He was feeling more nervous and antsy than he had in a very long time. It had been years since he had felt nervous about meeting a woman, since those awkward years when his hair was too long and he couldn't control any of his limbs, but here he was feeling like it was prom night all over again.
Key had no idea what he and Dae were even going to talk about, or if an apology was really the reason she had asked him over for dinner. Was she planning on going ahead with the annulment and she wanted to let him down gently? Was she planning on poisoning him and raking in non-existent insurance money? Or was she just trying to get to know him better? He wasn't sure how he felt about any of those options. Well, expect the poisoning and all. He knew that if anyone else was in this situation, an annulment was the most obvious choice but despite having every reason for it, he didn't want one. He balked at the idea of it. He just couldn't bring himself to divorce someone he barely knew, it just seemed wrong. Every time he saw Dae he wanted to know more about her; he just wasn't ready yet.
Finally at ten minutes before eight, Key was out his door and heading for Dae's apartment. He already knew which number she was, had known even before she told him (so he followed her a couple of times, they were married!) so when he stepped out of the elevator he knew just where to go. After wiping sweaty palms on his trousers, he reached up and knocked on the door. God he hoped this went well.
