Joann reached for Sam's hand as it was offered, shaking his hand while Jesse stifled a laugh behind his hand, disguising it as a cough. Really, the guy just sounded so fucking polite. And ma'am.
"Oh, please. I think we were the ones pushing to meet you more than the other way around," Joann continued, reaching up to push her hair back behind her ears. "Dinner won't be for another ten minutes or so. I had assumed Jesse would somehow manage to be late."
Jesse grinned over at her. "You forgot the put the ham in on time, didn't you?"
"Only by a couple minutes," she responded easily as she took the few steps back over to the stove. "Jamie has your father in the living room. He's trying to show him some new game of his, I think. I'll let you know when everything's ready."
"Do you need-" Jesse began to offer, but cut himself off as his mom shook her head. With a laugh, he nudged at Sam's arm with his elbow. "Come on. Jamie's way cooler than my mom anyway," he said in a mock whisper, loud enough so that his mom could hear it. She had simply shaken her head.
