Unfortunately for Brian, his night would indeed be ruined by the form of an eighteen-year-old with too much time on her hands and a mischievous streak a mile wide. Violet arrived at Mama's Diner half an hour before she was due to meet Elliot, partly since she was bored and didn't have anything better to do, but mostly she was just really bad at paying attention to the time. On average, she usually arrived at places either forty-five minutes early or ten minutes late, including to her classes and to work. Luckily for the as-yet-unknown Elliot, she was early this time around.
After being seated at a booth toward the back, Violet happily occupied herself by looking around her, taking in the unique atmosphere that was Mama's. True, Violet had been living in Nearside for five months, but during the previous semester, she spent most of her time on campus, living in the library or with various boyfriends in their rooms. She knew every restaurant and shop near the university and knew next to nothing about Solaris Rd, the street she actually lived on.
So, she had been in Mama's a few times, but never by herself with time to look around (not that Violet was the most observant person on good days). Violet loved, loved, LOVED greasy diner joints, but in her experience, most were touch and go with what she could eat. Of course there was always the old standby of breakfast foods for dinner, but sometimes it was nice to have something different...other than grilled cheese sandwiches or salads. She really hated lettuce and who wanted to eat a sandwich that could be made at home for half the price?
Back home in Arkansas, there weren't many places for her to eat at since most of the restaruants only served meat eaters with a baked potato options for the herbivores. She couldn't make a fuss about the menu choices as she was either told "tough luck" by the staff or her parents made her be quiet and eat what was offered. She was in Pennsylvania now and no parents were in sight so if Mama's DIDN'T have enough options for her, she could fully give the staff a piece of her mind. Er...nicely, of course. Eating at a restaurant would be hard to do from the outside, looking in, especially when she was supposed to meet her date here. Yeeeah, not the best first impression she wanted to make.
When a server/manager guy made the rounds, Violet eyed him and prepared to give him an earful if he failed to tell her what she wanted to hear. He was cute, too...for an old guy. "Yep!" she replied, cheerfully. She noticed his slip and couldn't help but grin up at the older man, her nose wrinkling. "I'm enjoying my menu immensely, thank you! I haven't actually looked at it yet, but the menu itself is very lovely in its description of the diner," she teased, referring to the picture of the diner on the front. "I actually have a quick question that you could probable help me with if you're not too busy."
