Come Monday, Alan's desk still looked too neat. Sure, it was a bit dusty because he hadn't been in all weekend, but dust was easy. All he had to do was go and wet a dishtowel and spend three minutes polishing its surface. Of course he could always go and clean other peoples' desks for them, but he thought he learned the lesson after his run in with Kate. Or maybe he hadn't. But as it were, he didn't want anyone to walk in on him like last time when he was trying to be a Good Samaritan.
Today was different though. For whatever reason, Finn McKenna wanted to buy him coffee. If complaining about being too morbid on Facebook got Alan free coffee, he had to make an effort to do it more often.
The nearest coffeeshop was a little ways away, maybe half a block, and despite the unrelenting weather, Alan went on foot. When he arrived, he was rewarded with high air conditioning. He'd already exhausted the topic of heatstroke for his last segment, maybe it was time to prepare one on the dangers of caffeine. As usual, Alan was at the forefront of that particular movement. He had a book about pop psychology with him. His sister had sent it to him weeks ago, said it was life-changing. While it wasn't exactly life-changing for Alan, it certainly killed time.
He sat down at a free table near the corner and waited.
