This wasn't their usual activity, but it was something J.J. had always enjoyed and he hoped Erica might find this romantic and not an imposition. He had originally thought about driving down to the coast and doing a picnic and stargazing, but with the five hour drive that just wasn't feasible, so instead he had gone with his plan b. Taking the day off early J.J. had come up to the state park and set the campsite up, choosing to camp in the primitive area as it was further away from everything, secluded and would allow for privacy. There was still a part of him that wondered if Erica would actually like camping, or if she would be upset that this was what he had decided to do on her birthday.
J.J. had picked Erica up from her apartment after she got off work, which she had switched shifts with another girl to get off at six. He didn't say a word about what they were doing, just that they were heading out of the city, but not to worry as she'd still be able to make it back into Fort Worth for work the next day. Nerves were definitely present as he drove, and the seemed to get worse as the neared the park. If she hated this he would be willing to just rent a hotel room for the night and do that instead, but he had really liked the idea of being away from everyone and everything, spending this evening with just her in the peacefulness of nature.
As they neared the entrance to the park J.J. couldn't help but glance over at Erica to see if she would have some kind of reaction, though he wondered if she would just assume that they were here for a short time and would head back to Fort Worth later in the evening. "We're going to have to do a little bit of hiking, Ri," He remarked as they pulled into the camper parking. Thankfully he had remembered to tell her to dress casually, wear comfortable shoes and pack an overnight bag. The casual clothes and comfortable shoes was because it was about a half mile hike to their campsite, which he was realizing after planning this that he didn't know if Erica liked hiking or camping, but he would find out soon enough he supposed.
He got out of the car and came around to the passenger side, smiling at her a little nervously as he spoke. "Ready?" J.J. wasn't about to tell her that they were camping, he wanted that part to be a surprise when they came to the campsite, which in hindsight he thought might be a bad idea, but there was no going back now.
