"... and we expect that this will be regarding the recent attack on Metropolis, Gotham and New York City. He's approaching the microphones now..."
Good evening, Metropolis. I won't take much of your time, but I wanted to speak to you.
Recently, our city was attacked. And not just this city, but our sister cities of New York and Gotham. We all experienced the fear that came with it, even myself. But I'm not here to prey upon those fears, nor tell you not to have them. Fear is healthy, it gives us an appreciation of what life is, and what's important. But I want to address what I see for the future, which I believe is the best balm for fear.
My resolve has not changed, will not changed. I am here, to help, to protect, but not to control. And I am here to spread my unwavering hope for a better time. And there are those that would criticize me, saying that Superman can have hope without fear. He has powers, he's indestructible.
Some of those same people will also criticize me for not taking more of an offensive stance when it comes to human life. I'm a protector, why shouldn't I do more protecting than I already do? Why not oversee who enters the city and who doesn't, who is elected into office, who controls jobs and where money goes?
The reason is simple: I am a protector, not a dictator. I love this city, I love this planet, it's my home. But I do not want to be the ruler of my home.
Hope stems from trust in your fellow man, control dampens it. I want us to be able to look to our neighbors in times of need, not always to the skies. I want the citizens of this city and the world to be able to stand together against our enemies, whoever they may be. That doesn't mean I won't be standing there beside you if the time comes for it, I will always be there.
But I don't want to make anyone feel like their fate is out of their hands. I want to spread hope, not despair.
Take the time to process your fear, find your friends, family, work colleagues, someone who can help you with them. Together, the act of your words spreads hope. That is the crux of what human beings are, their potential for hope.
Be strong with each other. I am not alone, and neither are you. Together, we are a stronger force than any that would attack our hope.
