Sometimes officers were caught in awkward situations. Like he was currently when he got the news while waiting at the police station for the child services to show up.
"What now... Gee. This is why we can't have nice things."
"Buh?"
Dick looked down at the year-old in his arms. "Sorry. News notification is done kiddo. Here, you can play with the phone again. Do you want fish?"
"Buh."
"I'll take that as a yes. Here you go. Get those fish for me. Thattaboy."
Amy Rohrbach came up to him, toting folders and looking tired. "You sure you've never interacted with kids before, Grayson?"
"I said I have some," he said with playful defensiveness. "Besides, look at this little guy. Sweet as can be."
"As long as you keep him happy until the caseworker gets here, consider yourself on official babysitting duty. Just sad all around though that he's caught in the middle of this."
"Yeah..." Dick leaned back, propping his feet up and holding onto the phone so the kid could bat at the screen while half laying. "Never fun when families are violent... But don't you worry, kid. It'll be okay."
