Mia Dearden posted to Project Positive Life Cuba has met the WHO standards for the 'elimination' of Mother to infant transmission of HIV and syphilis. There's been so much good news this week, but it doesn't seem like this is getting much mainstream traction. I'm a big proponent of the fact that just because someone has HIV doesn't mean they can't live a full, normal life. It's a fact that a lot of people can't seem to grasp, but that doesn't make it any less true. However, motherhood and HIV can come hand in hand with anxiety and fear. Hopefully making this more well known will help with this. A couple bullet points: The World Health Organization's standard for elimination is less than 50 of 100,000 births. That's 1 or less of 2,000, or .05% chance of transmission. It's likely America, Canada, and most other developed western countries have also met these standards, but haven't asked for validation from the WHO. __ hours/minutes ago · Like · Comment |
