Who: Internet Users (thanks to Chrissie and Stacey for helping NPC!) Where: Forum Thread Comments When: 11/26 (backdated) What: A debate about superpowered superheroes heats up. Rating: PG
[...buried in a forum thread slamming the Avengers.]
axdntemrgncy: Come on guys, they can’t be all bad, right? I mean they’re being heroic. But it’s also good the government has good control on the Avengers. It might be scary if they didn’t.
rickrollsitter: Are you kidding me? Like we can really trust the government to keep control over a bunch of over-powered freaks. You saw what they did to Gotham in their attempt to “save” it. That’s too much power for one person and now we got a bunch of them.
axdntemrgncy: I think they could be useful though. I mean, a guy that can hold up an entire building would be useful for saving lives in natural disasters and stuff, right? If they’re just used for things like that it should be alright.
Besides, better them going after the crazies in costumes than us. The ones that are wildcards are the scary ones. Who knows what they’re going to do.
rickrollsitter: Yeah, but he’d also be good for tearing down an entire building if he decides this hero stuff isn’t up his alley. Not every guy who says he’s a hero really is one, and what better way to screw us over than saving us enough that we have to depend on them all the time.
I’m telling you, they can’t be trusted. We can’t even trust our own government and why the secret identity? If they’re ready to go out there and be big damn heroes, they shouldn’t wear costumes. It’s not sane.
axdntemrgncy: I guess. It just seems so pessimistic. :(
iseetheend: The reality of the situation requires a certain amount of objective pessimism.
rickrollsitter: Exactly. Why should be so quick to trust these people? They show up outta nowhere, tell us they’re here to save us and we’re just expected to trust them completely? Hell no. How long before they decide that they should be in charge? What’s to stop them from taking over?
We don’t even know how they got these powers. Mutants, yeah, they got the X-gene but what about all those others? I don’t like them, I don’t trust them, and I don’t think they should be given that much freedom until we know they aren’t going to go batshit crazy on us.
axdntemrgncy: I just think that we are helpful and kind to those down on their luck most of the time, so they might not be different. If I had superpowers I’d help people.
And now you’re just making it sound like a conspiracy that all these people just got in on one day.
iseetheend: There is nothing harmless about their actions. rickrollsitter already mentioned the reckless destruction following in the wake of their acts of “heroism,” and then there is the fact that Superman savagely attacked a mentally-ill person. There are fundamental differences between these individuals and the rest of the human race. They are...incompatible.
The incidents being debated are part of a bigger picture. They are ominous visions of the future to come...however much of a future we may have left.
rickrollsitter: And what exactly would they deem a threat? I know it sounds like a conspiracy but some of the worst events in history have started off with “good intentions” on behalf of the monsters involved. Yeah, now they want to be heroes, but fame and pride, it gets to people. Whenever people have that much power, they’re always more likely to abuse it.
I’m with iseetheend on this. What sort of future are we expecting if we can’t even defend ourselves and have to have everyone else save us.
iseetheend: Oh, we can defend ourselves, and we very well may have to. You both should visit this website. It helped me see the reality of things.
