She had underestimated them. In the very end, with her on her hands and knees, her ruined mind allowed that realization as bitter as it was to accept. They had fought her rule that had last for so very long, had found their way to relics she could not have moved without inflicting a curse upon herself.
They would understand soon what it meant to destroy those chalices. Little consolation could be found in that but she clutched on to all that she had for whatever time was left for her. With the destruction of what had maintained her, she was no longer all mighty, no longer able to keep the appearance or life that she had for thousands of years. As she felt mortality consume her, everything about her that had been maintained because of her reincarnated pets headed into decay.
Before her eyes, the flesh of her hands wrinkled beyond recognition. Clumps of her hair first greyed rapidly and then fell from her skull. Brittle became her bones until she couldn't keep herself propped up. Brought down, pain radiated through out her aging, crippled body but there wasn't anyone who could assist her. The bodies of her minions had fallen around her, their minds having freed themselves from her control before they succumbed to death.
There were the Keres, her granddaughters in one form, violence a constant for them. Formed like her, there had been the Valkyries, who sought and respected the heroic deeds even among their prey. Memitim, perfectly androgynous, perfectly capable of being ruthless and ever unwilling to appear less than dignified. Utukku who had found calm and patience in everything, whether harmful or helpful. Cihuateteo, fearless in face of pain while vicious and inspiring terror. They had regretted what they had been forced to be apart of and cursed her as they fell, furious at being used for so long.
What would happen to them now, she didn't know, couldn't know. And wasn't that the same for her? In eyes that were slowly losing sight, tears formed and fell out of anger and even fear of what waited for her now. There would be no coming back and the Underworld of her time was not a forgiving place.
In the beginning, it had been she who came forth. Now she was alone again, leaving this world and never to return.
