Hyacinth was a good worker, there was no disputing that. Sometimes Jubokko thought that if he offered the boy a dead body to dispose of that maybe Hyacinth would do so without blinking.
But there would be no more corpses for the boy to deal with. There wouldn't be any corpses now - if he could help it. Autumn had begun and he felt a trigger of annoyance as well as anxiety as he saw the trees around him lose their leaves. He was prone to looking at himself more often, fearing any grey hair, wrinkling of skin or lack of good health overall.
He couldn't become like that, no matter whether he was tree or human. He couldn't lose what made him so striking. And if someone had to die to keep him looking resplendent then so be it. Humans cared too little about the beauty around them. His forceful actions would be justified - if ever found out about.
