Summary: Anubis finds his brother dead and handles shit accordingly
Syrinx was still missing. He’d told Sita he’d look into it, which was exactly what he’d been doing that day. Later he’d curse himself for leaving the palace, for leaving his brother alone. If he’d been there, maybe he could have stopped it. He knew that wasn’t true, however. He couldn’t have stopped it.
Anubis was just coming back to the palace - just walking in through the gates - when he heard the shout. That had been his brother. Somehow he knew. He tensed instantly, rushing forward to find his brother. He wasn’t in his rooms, he wasn’t in the palace at all, so he looked outside. And there he was, his body crumpled, broken, and bloody. He was breathing, but just barely. His heart was racing and there was a sick feeling in his stomach. Kneeling next to him, he looked his brother over, feeling the panic rising. No no no. This wasn’t-
NO!
There were voice next to him, talking to him, but he didn’t let them close, didn’t let them touch his brother. His brother’s eyes met his briefly before they closed. Gathering his brother into his arms, he took him to an inner room to clean him up and ready his body for the funeral he’d have to plan now. No one else would do this. No one else was allowed. He felt the pain of it circling around his chest, constricting until it felt like he couldn’t breathe. Echo, Helen, Syrinx. They were all forgotten in that moment. His brother was dead. What was he supposed to do now? “You’re not supposed to die,” he whispered to his brother, resting his head against his chest. He wasn’t supposed to die.
“Sir.” The voice of one of the servants came from the side and he straightened up. Yes, these were his servants and, under normal circumstances, he’d never worry about appearing to be anything he wasn’t, but these weren’t normal circumstances. “A woman’s been found. One of the other servants said she was seen leaving your brother’s chambers. She was disguised as a servant. What should we do with her?”
It was then, the realization sunk in. He was the decision maker now. It was him that had to pick up his brother’s job and look after the region. His eyes widened a fraction before he took control of himself and straightened. “Bring her to me,” he said, voice firm. None of this was what he wanted. He was an insurance policy, but he was never meant to be used. His brother was supposed to live. He was supposed to run the region, but he was dead now. He was dead and it was Anubis’ job to step up. It was unthinkable to let anyone else do it for him. It was always a possibility that he’d have to do this. “But not here. I’ll go into the room we use for talks. Let no one in here.”
When the man left, Anubis turned, pressing a kiss to his brother’s forehead. “I’ll be back. I’m sorry, brother.”
The conference room was empty, quiet. Anubis frowned to himself, fighting against the urge to leave and go back to his brother’s side. He didn’t want to stay where he was. He didn’t want to do any of this. It wasn’t supposed to be him standing here but there was nothing for it now. No matter how little he wanted it, it was his now. There was a knock at the door, followed by two servants and a woman walking through the door. The moment the door opened, Anubis’ face went blank but there was a slowly burning anger in his eyes.
“You were seen leaving my brother’s room.” His back straightened and he took a step forward. He could sense the darkness there. It wasn’t all she was, but it stood out to him strongly. She was quiet which bothered him. “What is your name?” Again nothing. “What are you doing here? I know the servants that work for me. You do not belong here.” But he hadn’t been there when she entered. Someone must have slipped up somewhere. The only response he got was a blank look. No matter the question, he was met with stony silence. Anubis’ expression hardened. He didn’t feel like dealing with this. Not now. “Put her in the dungeons. I’ll have someone see to her.” His eyes focused on her and the pain of loss cropped up again. “Believe me when I say I will find out if you were the cause for the Sultan’s death. If you are found to be guilty, there will be no mercy.” And he would feel no shame in it because it meant she had taken something precious. She’d taken so much without even understanding what it was she took.
He waved the servants away, dismissing them to take the girl to the dungeons. The Babylonian people would need to be addressed and the region leaders. A funeral needed to be planned. There was a lot of work to be done now and all he wanted to do was sit quietly with his brother and have a private service with no one around. He needed to contact Set and Osiris. His head hurt. Anubis let out a sigh before leaving the room to return to his brother. He’d take a few hours to deal with everything before addressing his people and deciding how to handle the funeral.
