The upside of being a self-made man was having control over one's day. The downside of being a self-made man was that despite that control, there was too much to be done to ignore anything. Still, there were times he found lulls in-between the management of his business and could be found at home during hours his family might be.
The manor wasn't quite the same when first purchased, had been painstakingly renovated, redecorated and added on to over the years. It had been a century old when first acquired, fill with history and charm. It had only required a loving hand and Theseus gave it that. It wasn't very long after his acquiring the house when he married Hera.
And she was a good woman. Never having given him a reason to let himself wander or find something of more amusement. He doubted she'd even tolerate that. Theseus knew what loyalty was but he had not always been faithful, his selfishness bone-deep. That she appealed to his selfishness was only luck for her and his fidelity should never be mistaken for something he did out of goodness. She fulfilled all he wanted. That was all.
He'd slipped into the kitchens briefly just to stir the servants a bit. He'd never be nobility but he knew that the money he'd acquired over the many years made him about or more wealthy than some. And have the Marshal of Iriy as a wife was also very helpful. Now on his way out of their with a bowl full of important strawberries, he sought the very woman who oversaw the armies of the region.
--
The upside of being a self-made woman was much the same. Unlike Theseus, Hera refused to acknowledge any downsides. She'd chosen the military for a reason: it was the only position of true national leadership that a non-royal could otherwise attain. What did the chancellor rule over? Or even the ambassador? Hera had cavalry, infantry, planes and ships and guns: all waiting on the flick of her wrist or the roll of her eyes.
Power was intoxicating. Especially so when one deserved it. And there was no one in Iriy who could deny that Hera had won her position through sheer talent and dedication. She'd lost a husband (not that the arranged marriage had meant that much) and raised a daughter on her own, all the while fighting tooth and nail for her place on top.
And then Theseus came along. He and she had fit from the start. Busy people with big goals and big plans of achieving them, yet with a desire for family that would not stay silent. Almost implicitly, they understood each other. That he accepted Polyxena was a plus. Consequently, marriage had been the natural outcome of their relationship, surprising no one in how quickly it came.
Though she supposed that had something to do with Hera's withholding sex until marriage, even if she already had a daughter by another man.
Hearing someone else shuffle into the room, she closed her journal and lay it aside. She looked over her shoulder, smiling once she realized just who had decided to drop by. "Husband," she said, caressing the word with her typical contralto roll. "To what might I owe the pleasure?"
--
It had a good bit to do with her withholding sex until marriage, the tease. But it hadn't been the sort of situation he wanted to walk away from. She had a pre-started family and he could fit right into that. He didn't even think of her first husband, dismissing him and believing there was nothing he had done that Theseus couldn't do better. When it came to Polyxena, he granted the credit to Hera for the girl's upbringing and still maintained his dismissal of the deceased man.
In other words, Theseus saw things and believed in things the way he wanted and no one could change that for him.
"Me," he answered her, all ego and no shame. "And you could try my name. Or do you want to save that for when I..." The pause was not done out of sudden thought of someone who might be nearby (though he feigned a check for Hermione just for show) but so he could grin at her. "Should I finish that or let you?"
--
Though Hera did not show it, she was a sensual creature. A sly smile spread across her face at Theseus's teasing. She rose slowly, gracefully, and tread smoothly towards him. "But what will happen to all these strawberries, The-se-us?"
Easily plucking the bowl from his hands, she retreated back into the room. She placed the bowl on the side table as she sank back into bed, happily taking one of the fruits. After a bite, she continued. "I'm surprised we're both at home, for once."
--
"You don't want me to tell you, you want me to show you," he assured, letting her have the fruit and following her. The door, of course, was kicked shut and he knew that if that didn't serve as a warning, then tough luck for whoever wandered in (really, shameless was in his middle name).
Taking a place beside her, he reached for one of the fat little one, rolling it between his fingertips. "I have to go tonight to oversea a shipment so I came home early to get some sleep here. I tried napping in my office but the men aren't partial to being quiet."
--
She easily accommodated his presence, her head finding purchase on his shoulder as a hand traced his arm. "Do I now? You'll have to convince me.
"But if it's quiet you're looking for..." So she would be sleeping alone tonight -- the thought irked her, but she'd never had reason to lose faith in Theseus. That, and she'd left him alone in bed a fair amount of times herself.
--
"Convincing you is the fun part." It was downright peaceful, this. And even an adventurer like himself needed a moment of downtime. The strawberry was taken whole because a sweeter treat was waiting to be savoured beside him.
"What, don't you know to be quiet when I'm inside of you?" Turning his head, he pressed a kiss to the top of Hera's. "Not that I'm suggesting you try too hard to be."
--
She laughed, running her leg along his. "If you wanted quiet, you should've started convincing your right hand."
Not that she was going to let Theseus occupy himself now that he'd gotten her riled up. Taking one of the strawberries, she pressed it right against his mouth.
--
He didn't have a romantic or loving remark for that. There hadn't been that many times since he first was introduced to a woman that he had needed his right hand. There had been a period of time between his meeting Hera and marrying her when Theseus had behaved just enough. He hadn't been a saint (really, who expected him to be?) and his hands had wandered and he had flirted but he'd viewed it as harmless as compared to what he could have done.
Also, her legs could be a great distraction. Fingertips on her thigh, they slid forward as he took the fruit from her fingertip, well making sure to take a bit of her finger as well. An affectionate, promising lick was given to the tip of it.
--
And that was the end of lazy teasing. Hera reached up, happy to fall back into this rhythm with her husband, taking and giving in equal measure.
There was never a good time to walk in on one's parents. Not in such circumstances. Hermione could've gone her entire life without having to see her parents in such a manner, but luck was not on her side that day, nor was a lack of curiosity. Things had been quiet around the house, and so in a rare display of childlike curiosity, the little blonde went in search for dear mother and father.
Rather than calling out to them, she moved as quietly as a cat, peering into rooms so that she could locate the set of them in silence. Maybe she wouldn't have to say anything, in case they were -- no. That was horrifying. The very naive part of her asked, Wouldn't they be loud anyway?
And so she did find them. In a compromising position, but that wasn't as interesting as where her father's fingers were headed, where they were, and so in a bout of stupidity, rather than turning right around and scurrying out of sight, she opened her mouth.
"... Oh."
--
He knew that 'oh' was not his wife. And he knew the household staff weren't the sort to make a peep if they found...what was going on in that room. And Polyxena had moved out but even if she had found them, they'd never have known about it. So he lifted his head, his mouth having been just so close from his wife's, to see whether he was right about who it was.
There was no pride in being right though her timing, while bad regardless, was still good considering where his mouth had planned on ending up. Looking away from Hermione, Theseus met Hera's eyes and it had to be noted that his finger had never left her. At the very least, they weren't moving but that was about all the mercy he had in him that moment considering the state his wife's very presence had put him in.
"I could keep going but I think you both might not like that much right now." Yes, he was smirking.
--
Instantly, Hera was in mother mode. How she managed to set her appearance to rights in mere seconds, the world will never know, but she managed, out of the bed and ushering Hermione gently out of the room in no time.
