Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney [2005, DS/Wii/3DS] ZSlyzer playthrough The first game of the series, actually written with a potential localisation in mind, haha. Funny, because later games in the series very clearly make attempts to make the setting look very Japanese and try their hardest to make it impossible to localise or something. It's kind of a fandom joke. Anyway, it's very enjoyable as a stand-alone story, if you only want a taste of what the series is like, whether or not it's for you, etc. It establishes the formula and if you don't like it, you probably won't like the rest, either.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Justice for All [2007, DS/Wii/3DS] ZSlyzer playthrough The dreaded "middle child" of the Ace Attorney series, a lot of people give this game hate, but I absolutely love it. It isn't really skippable, either, which probably doesn't help in the eyes of those that dislike this entry. And I can really see where they're coming from. The cases range from controversial to forgettable, but there are conventions broken by this game as well, and I think that does it good.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Trials and Tribulations [2007, DS/Wii/3DS] ZSlyzer playthrough This is it -- the fan favourite, at least, to my knowledge. It isn't mine, but it's written so beautifully, and really brings Phoenix Wright's arc to a close. I know many people didn't continue past this game for a multitude of reasons, but I think they're doing the series a disservice.
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney [2008, DS/iOS] ZSlyzer playthrough My personal favourite entry of the main series. This is by far an unpopular opinion, but I'm proud of it, it tried a lot of things and introduced some fantastic characters. It's flawed, I'll be the first to admit that, but its strengths are very powerful.
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth [2010, DS] ZSlyzer playthrough The first game not written by Shu Takumi, but by Takeshi Yamazaki, who goes on to write several more AA games. This game has a controversial ending that I hilariously can't even remember that well. I desperately need to replay it, I play a character from it and everything. It's very pandering in what I consider a good way, coming across as a bit of a thank you to the fans. Or at least that's how I see it, since I was a fan when it came out, haha, I still remember learning the news at midnight on a school night, desperately shoving a plushie toward my face so my parents didn't hear my scream of joy.
Ace Attorney Investigations 2 [2011, DS] Japan only ZSlyzer playthrough This was Yamazaki & team's second game, not likely to be localised officially, but there is a complete fan translation so good it's almost indistinguishable from the official thing anyway. The first game on this list I will personally deem skippable, but very few reasons not to. If you're watching the entire series through LP, it probably won't feel any different at all coming right after the previous AAI.
Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney [2014, 3DS] ZSlyzer playthrough I listed this before Dual Destinies due to me feeling like it's a nice break to help the transition to 3DS, aesthetically -- also possibly because I personally played this one before Dual Destinies. My personal favourite entry of the entire series, for both Layton and Ace Attorney. If my tastes mean anything to you [it's non-canon and absolutely skippable]. Also, this is why Shu Takumi wasn't writing the Investigations games -- he was writing this gem instead. It too has something of a controversial ending, but it was more ignored than many of the others, which is a crime of the highest order, it is the best of the whole series and combines two of my favourite things and it's why I got a 3DS and I waited two years for this--
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Dual Destinies [2013, 3DS, iOS] Released after Layton in Japan ZSlyzer playthrough This is the Yamazaki team's third writing job, my personal favourite of theirs. I mean. If it isn't obvious from the whole... paying for a permanently insane IJ account of a character that makes his debut here... thing.
Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken [2015, 3DS] Japan only Looks like Dai Gyakuten Saiban is translating this! We don't know [but doubt] if this will ever see a Western release, which is a shame because it's intended to be the first of a trilogy, and why Shu Takumi isn't writing his games. Because he's doing this... I won't expose myself to too much fan translations of this one until the 3DS is officially dead, but I hear it's amazing if you won't want to skip it. It has Sherlock Holmes in it or something.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney − Spirit of Justice [2016, 3DS] ZSlyzer playthrough Like DD, this was written by Yamazaki's team. I have mixed feelings about it but I mean, I play two characters from it, so they're very wildly mixed feelings. I won't be able to say much else without going into an essay about this game for years, probably. |
