Elena wasn't entirely sure what had happened. Things had been going well with Stefan. For the first time since her parents' deaths, she had started to feel alive again. The statement she'd been telling everyone, that she was alright, had finally been true. And then he disappeared. No messages, no texts, no communication of any sort. And she found herself slipping backwards. Her daily routine had become mechanized once more, even as she struggled to not be that girl. She didn't want to go to pieces because of a guy. She was stronger than that, wasn't she?

Forcing herself out of bed that morning, Elena had padded downstairs in her pajamas, putting some coffee on. She certainly needed it this morning. Watching it brew, she didn't even hear the footsteps behind her, lost in throught.

Jeremy made his way downstairs to face the day even though he wasn't looking forward to it. Though to be fair he hadn't really looked forward to any day since his parents died.

"Elena..." he said, his tone maudlin as he made his way over to the counter. "Is there coffee?"

The voice startled her, Elena jumping slightly as she turned to face her brother. "Yeah," she answered, voice soft. "I'm making some now, Jer. It'll be ready any minute."

She had first dibs, though.

"Thanks, Elena" he answered as he made his way over to the kitchen counter and taking a seat on one of the stools. He didn't really say anything else, because he didn't have anything to say.

Once it was done brewing she actually poured them both a cup before sliding onto the stool next to him. And, though normally she would have been pressing him on how he was feeling at the moment her own feelings were in turmoil, Elena not sure she was on good footing herself.

And then it hit her...maybe her brother had some insight into how boys' minds functioned. "...does it really seem like a good idea to ghost someone and...disappear?"

He was taken back by her question, so he stammered for a moment and then looked over at her. "What do you mean exactly?" he asked.

"Did someone hurt you?" he added, clearly ready to do something about it if they had. He may not be in the best of places right now himself, but he wasn't about to let anyone hurt one of the few people he had left in his life.

"Not exactly," Elena answered. Well, she was hurt but she didn't need her brother to go out on a terror spree trying to find Stefan.

Still she sighed softly. "I was...I went out a few times with this guy. And he disappeared on me."

"So, he did hurt you" he answered with a small shake of his head. "Who is he?" he asked, clearly ready to make things right for his sister.

"It doesn't matter," Elena answered softly. But she turned, hugging him. "Thank you, though."

"It most certainly does" he answered, giving him a strong look. "You are my sister and I don't want anyone thinking it's okay to hurt you" he added.

"I'm not sure he's even in town anymore," Elena answered, sighing as she pulled away. "He hasn't been in school lately.

"It's alright. I'll get over this, too."

"Elena you shouldn't let people treat you that way" he answered, shaking his head slightly.

"You're too nice" he added.

"If he's gone there's not much I can do," Elena pointed out. "It'll be alright Jer. I promise."

"All I know is he better not come back to town" Jeremy answered. "Because if I ever meet him I assure you that he won't like me".

She smiled at that, even if it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Thanks Jer," she answered.

"Any time" he answered. He may not be in the best of places at the moment himself, but he would always be there for her. She was one of the only people he had left.
