Homecoming
Who: Sidonie, anyone else who happens to see her standing outside the house
Where: Old Victorian house on the outer edge of the town. (Grandma Abby's place)
When: 3:30 PM
What: Sid comes home to Mysteria after being away at uni.
Perhaps she hadn't noticed as a child because she was so acclimated to it, and it was years and distance which only now revealed the many flaws. Regardless, when Sidonie Wilder once again laid eyes on the house she grew up in -- now her house -- only then did she realize that she had her work cut out for her. The old Victorian was practically falling apart.
"Oh, fabulous."
Since there was no-one around, she felt no need to hold in her exasperation. It wasn't as if the oleander and heirloom rosebushes were going to snipe back. Come to think of it, they could use a good hard pruning. Unceremoniously dropping the heavy luggage on the sidewalk where she stood, Sid appraised the run-down house in spite of the fact that she was freezing in the winter cold that she was not yet readjusted to.
Most of the paint had worn away, the wood panels were warped in many places and rotting in others, and a decrepit tree threatened to reclaim a rear section of the house. In short, a disaster waiting to happen. It was nothing short of a miracle that the roof was still intact; in fact, it looked as if the tiles had been replaced fairly recently. At least Grandma Abby had seemed to know what could not be neglected if she still wanted a literal roof over her head.
Sid didn't want to think about the fact that she was gone. Far better to busy herself with what needed to be done, and there would be enough work to keep her mind off her grandmother's passing well past the funeral in a few days. Taking up her luggage once again with a grunt of Herculean effort, Sid started on what looked to be a long trip to the front door.
There's probably a metaphor somewhere in this, she thought sardonically.
