Who: Ron and Percy
When: Tuesday Afternoon
Where: Percy's Office
What: Ron needs help becoming an adult.

Ron had a very thick stack of papers in his arms. Apparently buying a house was difficult. Truthfully he'd expected it to be easy. He'd been saving the money for years and figured once he had a good bit saved up he could just buy a house. It turned out getting a loan from Gringotts was much harder than he expected.

He had a plan. Ron knew most people didn't see him as a planner, but he was. Every step he had made since the war ended was to reach an end result. It was a very long and tedious game of wizards chess and Ron felt, without a doubt, he was a few moves away from winning. Winning her. Finally. That was provided he didn't bollocks it up before Christmas. Ron knew that was a very real possibility.

Going to Harry hadn't been an option. Neither of them were ever any good at keeping secrets from Hermione and Ron didn't want to risk her getting it out of Harry if she suspected something. For the same reason he couldn't go to his parents. Which really only left one option and that was Percy. So, Ron found himself outside Percy's office hoping his brother could make sense of all the Gobblygook scrawled across the stack of parchment.

From down the hall, Percy saw his still lanky baby brother waiting by his office. "Ron!" he called, waving to him.

"You caught me right as I was coming in for lunch." Percy grinned as he reached his destination. He unlocked his office. "Come in. Take a seat." Walking in, the office was completely immaculate: everything was in its proper place, the shelves filled with books, various certifications and awards neatly placed on the walls, and a floo line that he often used to get to Audrey's -- in case of emergencies.

"So they're mortgage papers, you said?" Percy asked cooly as he took a seat at his desk.

Ron followed Percy inside the office, trying his best to be careful and not touch anything. Percy's rooms always reminded him of museums. He didn't want to break anything and there was always a good chance he would.

"Uh, yeah." Sitting down, Ron set the stack of parchment on Percy's desk. "I have to sign these things in a million different places, but I don't want to.. you know.. make a promise I can't keep or something."

"Right," Percy took the stack and briefly leafed through it. Nothing out of the ordinary. One's standard mortgage. He took out his wand and made temporary highlights on certain important passages and places where he had to sign.

"So what finally made you decide to get your own place?" he asked as he worked. "I thought you liked having mum cook for you and do your laundry."

Ron glared at that comment. Why did everyone think he was some lazy sod who enjoyed mooching off of his mother? "Mum likes cooking for me," he pointed out. "No one else comes and sees her as much as they should. And I've been living with her to save money, not because I like being at home still. I've been planning on buying a house for years."

He knew he was being defensive, but Ron couldn't help it. Whenever he felt as though someone might be teasing him or judging him, Ron's defenses went up quickly.

Without stopping his work, Percy returned Ron's glare with one of his own. No matter how old Ron got, he was always going to be Percy's stubborn little brother, always jostling to prove himself.

He looked back at the parchments. "It looks like you could have afforded this place a year and a half ago. Why the wait?"

"I could have? I didn't think I had enough money," Ron said with a shrug. Really, he didn't know how much he had in his vault. Nearly all of his earnings went in there and if he had thought about it more, Ron should've been able to calculate the savings he was growing.

"Besides, I wasn't ready yet." Last year he wasn't speaking to Hermione much. She didn't know he fancied her and he wasn't going to buy a house until she knew that. It was all part of his plan.

"Mmm," Percy muttered in disapproval. Of course he wouldn't have known. By Ron's age, Percy was already investing in cross Magic-Muggle finances.

He was approaching the end of the stack. "Living alone?"

Ron really did try to ignore Percy's tone. He had expected Percy to be impressed that he had saved so well and was making a wise investment with his gold. Most people wouldn't have expected that from Ron. But he supposed he wasn't all that impressive no matter what he did. Ron knew he should've been used to it by now, but it still stung.

"Um. Do they need to know that? I mean, does that factor into whether they give me the loan or not? Because I'm not sure yet and I don't want to write that I'll be alone if I'm not."

"Well," Percy began. As well as highlighting the important bits of text, he translated some of it into layman's terms for his brother. "No. But I honestly can't imagine you living alone. I recommend a flatmate or two to divy up chores and the like."

Reaching up to rub the back of his neck, Ron frowned. "See, the thing is..." Ron trailed off, not sure how to explain himself to Percy. It sounded mental even to Ron and he wasn't sure if Percy would laugh at him or not.

"I sort of hope Hermione is going to live there with me. I'm kind of buying it for her. For us."

Okay, now this merited his full attention. Jerking upward in his seat, Percy's face shot up to look at his younger brother.

"What? Hermione?" The shock that initially registered on his face slowly became a smug grin. "Did I hear that correctly? Hermione? You? As an 'us'?"

"It's not as mental as it sounds!" Ron didn't want Percy thinking Ron had lost his mind. Hermione fancied him and they.. well he loved her, even if he wasn't sure if she felt that strongly about him.

"I was, um, see I thought for Christmas that I might, uh, ask her to.. you know. Marry me." Ron felt his cheeks going red. Percy was going to think he was a complete idiot.

"Well no, of course not," Percy attempted to clear up his own opinion on the matter. The beaming smile on his face was telling more than he could ever say, though. He was actually quite...ecstatic. "I think it's a brilliant idea. You know how much I've approved of Hermione."

Would she approve of him, though?

"Christmas is a romantic time of the year. How do you intend on asking?"

"I'm not sure. I mean.. I still have to ask her parents." Ron was a pretty traditional bloke. He didn't believe in letting women pay for dates, he always held doors open for them and he couldn't imagine proposing to Hermione without asking her parents for their permission.

"And I can't afford a ring. So, the house is sort of the engagement ring. You don't think that's a bad idea, do you? She's so practical I thought she'd appreciate it."

"Typically, women want their rings. They like their jewelry. Diamonds. Something to show off. An engagement ring is the most material manifestation of their suitor's love." When Percy proposed to Audrey, he made sure to acquire the most elegant engagement ring his galleons could buy.

"But you do have a point. A house is highly practical. And Hermione isn't a typical girl," Percy noted, as he turned the stack of parchments back to Ron. After he'd been through with them, anybody could make sense of the notes.

Ron let out a long breath. "Thanks, Percy. For helping me with this. You're not going to say anything to anyone, are you? Because I don't want Mum to know yet. You know how she gets."

Mostly he didn't want a lot of people knowing his plans until he was certain they didn't come back to kick him in his arse.
