Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Damocles and Marcus Belby
What: Dam is hungry
When: Tuesday evening
Where: Tea Room
Why: Because they haven't met yet

He couldn't take it anymore. The grumbling in his stomach had become a distraction. It was either get some food or go home and Damocles wasn't about to let his potion sit unattended for longer than he had to. Still, it made him uneasy to go down to the hospital tea room. The pictures he'd seen in his Weasley journal were enough to make him want to cook his own food. It would probably look the same, but at least he'd know exactly what was in it.

Damocles checked the simmering cauldron once more. It was simmering. He figured he could get way for half an hour tops. He headed downstairs.

A graphic novel in one hand and wand flicking in the other, Marcus was lazily guiding celery sticks and herbs into a bubbling pot. The Tea Room slow was as usual and Marcus had only an hour and a half left of his shift. He wasn't really going to try to be too careful with whatever was left. He could always fry the end result and people would eat it anyway.

Someone entered the Tea Room. Marcus shot up and looked out into the main room. Lisa was gone. Oh well. Waitressing wasn't a hard job, was it? He stepped away from the kitchen and came into the Tea Room.

"Hey welc--whoa," Marcus stared awestruck at the man who entered and backed away a couple of steps. For a moment, he thought his father walked in. The spectacles threw him off, though. "Sorry," he said finally. "I could have sworn you were someone else."

Damocles raised an eyebrow and frowned. Why was this young man so startled? It wasn't like he was the stranger here. Damocles had been working at the hospital for more than two decades.

"Sorry?" He wasn't sure what he was supposed to say. On one hand he was sorry the boy had been mistaken, but on the other he hadn't done anything but walk through the door. Ah, well. His expression softened. People were funny sometimes.

"Do you work here? I was hoping to get something to eat."

"Oh. Yeah!" He said a little too loudly. Marcus was honestly still recovering after mistakenly believing that his father had just walked in and that the world would subsequently end. Shaking his head and blinking hardly, he snapped back to his senses.

"I mean, yeah. I work here. I'm the one who cooks. There's erm," he craned his neck toward the kitchen. "There's not much going on back there though." Marcus was stumbling over his words again. He was always nervous around older people and this dude was pretty old and business-y. What he meant to say was that he'd be glad to cook something up, but it would take some time. Plus, he didn't really know what was on the menu. Lisa would just shout random things and he'd interpret what she was saying most of the time.

Damocles couldn't help but wonder if the chef was always nervous or if he'd just been caught doing something he shouldn't have been doing. Either way, Damocles wasn't exceptionally bothered. Most of the younger hospital employees acted a little intimidated when they met him just because he was older and a person of authority. Still, Dam couldn't help but think there was something more to the chef's startlement.

"Well, I'll have something simple." Damocles answered with a small, reassuring smile. Maybe that would help to ease the boy's nerves. "I'm running on empty right now, so anything works. Coffee would be grand."

"Coffee? Coffee is terrible if you're running on empty," Marcus replied, furrowing his brows disapprovingly. He didn't want to feed a customer some plain coffee, especially if Lisa weren't around. This was his chance to really get creative.

"You need protein. A lot of protein. And carbs." In his head, he ran through the list of edible ingredients left in the kitchen. "How do you feel about bacon?"

He had bacon. Lots of bacon.
