Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Ron and Hermione
When: Friday Night
Where: Hermione's Flat
What: Ron's cooking dinner for her

This time he had to do it right. He had to make sure that every single detail of their date was perfect. He went to the nicest grocery store in London and bought all his ingredients. He even practised making the meal the night before for him Mum and Dad. Mum had liked it and there was no better cook in the world than Mum. That had to mean something, right?

Ron told himself that in spite of the previous date, Hermione did like him. And he really, really liked her. Okay, he loved her. He'd been in love with her for years. That should be all that mattered, but Ron wasn't going to take any chances. Even Harry said that Hermione thought he was a goof. He just had to prove to her that he wasn't.

Holding a bag in one arm, Ron knocked on Hermione's door. He was going to do this right.

Hermione had spent most of her free time over the past couple days detail cleaning her kitchen. It looked like a magazine. Everything was spotless and looked new, even though most of what she had in there was either a hand-me-down or purchased used. Hermione didn't have much money, her parents were trying to put together their careers once more--after taking a year long sabbatical in Australia. Hermione was putting the finishing touches on her outfit (tricks she'd learned from Lavender) when she heard the knock at the door.

She headed out of her bedroom, kicking the door closed behind her, then crossed the spotless living room to answer the door. Hermione cleaned when she was nervous, and the place couldn't be more perfect. Well, except her bedroom. That looked like an explosion of clothes--she was trying to find the perfect outfit, and emptied her closet onto the floor and bed.

She pulled open the door and broke into a smile. "Hi, Ron."

Seeing Hermione, Ron couldn't help but smile. She looked really pretty. "Hi," he said and shifted the bag in his arms. "You look nice." Leaning down, he kissed her cheek and smiled to himself. She smelled nice too.

"I hope you're hungry. I brought a lot."

"Starving." Hermione blushed at the kiss to her cheek. "Come in, come in." She closed the door behind him and led the way into her kitchen.

"I didn't know what you'd need, so I cleaned everything." You could eat off the floor. Hermione wouldn't recommend it, but all the surfaces in her kitchen were as cleaned and sanitized as her dishes.

"Oh, don't worry about it. I brought everything." Ron grinned and set the bag down on the counter which made a very loud thud. He started pulling out food, spices, pots and pans. There was a bottle of wine which Ron handed to Hermione to put into the refrigerator. "Dad finally got a telly at the Burrow and there is a whole channel thing about food. I like watching it," he said as thought it would be surprising.

Pulling out a bottle of olive oil, Ron placed a pan on the stove and lit the fire. He took out a package of pork chops, wrapped in white butcher's paper and started getting everything in order.

Hermione was very surprised. She accepted the bottle of wine and slipped it into the door of the fridge, then turned around to lean against the opposite counter and watch him as he started to prepare to cook. It was rather impressive, actually. Like watching him in his element. She couldn't help but smile.

"The Food Network?" Hermione asked. "I'm surprised it's taken your parents so long to get a television. But, I suppose it's better this way. Tellys are really addictive. I can just imagine how many hours you lot would have spent arguing over which channel to watch if you'd had one growing up."

"I'm glad we didn't. It was nice to be outside and stuff." Ron opened her cabinets looking for a small bowl and threw in some seasonings. The smell of rosemary and garlic mixed together with olive oil killed the room. Ron (thankfully) had learned a few spells that made cooking food go faster. He dropped the pork chops into the marinade and with a wave of his wand it was like the meat and been soaking in the oil overnight.

"Dad likes it now that he's retired. He watches stuff about Muggles. I think sometimes he thinks they all act like that though. He doesn't always get it's acting."

"And I imagine your Quidditch skills wouldn't have developed due to lack of practice." Hermione said. Quidditch wasn't as important to her as it was to the rest of them, but she understood that they were fond of the sport.

Hermione watched him wave his wand, and the food became seasoned. She was more impressed than she'd ever care to admit. It was nice to see Ron doing something he was so good at, and enjoyed so much.

She nodded. "That's one of the other problems with the television. It's addictive, and it's misleading. People don't always understand that normal humans don't act like that."

Ron started a second pot with some water in it. He pulled out fresh green beans and conjured a knife to cut them. "We both know I'm not that good at Quidditch anyway."

Adding the beans to the pot, Ron added a bit of butter and some seasoning before setting the pork chops into the sizzling pan and watched them start to cook.

"Dad thinks everything is the way he sees it. I kind of like that about him."

Hermione frowned a little. "You were brilliant at Quidditch, Ron." She said, scolding him for being down on himself. "Remember? Weasley is our king?" She said, grinning.

She took a step closer to watch what he was doing. "Well, at least most of the shows on the food channel are about how to make food, and not stupid shows about quote-unquote reality." She used finger quotes on the word 'reality'.
