Narcissa wasn't feeling very well. At least, that was what she'd told her parents when they'd inquired what she planned to do while they were out for the afternoon. The truth was that she did have a bit of a headache, but it wasn't going to go away. It had become a constant, along with the aching pain in her chest, for two months now and had only grown steadily worse since she'd seen Lucius at the hospital a week and a half ago.
It was what came of being so damned conflicted. Her heart, mangled though it was, wanted Lucius badly, desperately, and hated that they were apart. But her head, trying to be cool and rational, reminded her over and over that Lucius had not proven he loved her or that he deserved to be trusted (and that if the way he had behaved was his idea of love then she was better off without him, surely).
But she didn't feel better off. She still felt lonely, and empty, and utterly, utterly miserable. She still couldn't quite wrap her mind around why all of this had happened. How could Lucius have made such a cruel, careless, crass bet to begin with? Even if he hadn't loved her then, shouldn't he have thought her and her virtue worth more than a goal in a game?
Sighing heavily, she let her head fall back against the armchair that she was curled in by the fire in the Rose Drawing Room. The plans for the children's ward Halloween celebration (which was now only a few days away) and the toy drive lay untouched in her lap.
