Life had taught Bobby Drake a thing or two in his short 19 years. Since he was 13, his parents had all but disowned him, shunning him with the rest of his childhood friends and entire neighborhood for being a mutant. Bobby had been to prison - twice! - and had discovered first hand just how poorly people could act when they felt threatened. Bobby had learned that being different meant you didn't have it easier, you had it harder. He learned that differences were things that made people make bad moves, bad choices, and be bad people, but he also had learned that sometimes those people - like in the case of Rogue of the Brotherhood - could turn around and come back.
His parents taught him that lesson again when, as his mother laid on what might have been her deathbed fighting an illness, his father had forgiven him and welcomed him back home and Bobby had, in an instant, forgotten all those hateful things the man had said to him, the fact that he had chased him off the property with a shotgun, and how he told their neighbors that he no longer had a son. All of that was water under the freshly rebuilt bridge of family ties.
Living with Aunt May had taught Bobby even more about family warmth. She had accepted him as her own under her roof and it was saving him a fortune on rental fees, paying only a small amount for the spare bedroom he shared in Aunt May's house, and even watching Peter and Aunt May talk and interact, it warmed Bobby's heart. How could he hold onto any bitterness when he had examples like that to glean from?
Bobby's time these days was spent with Jubilee, the X-Men, and in his college courses. It was a lot different than his days at Xavier's School as a student, and sometimes, like today, Bobby liked to come out to the lake and host a pick up game of hockey, just for old times sake.
Madison would be meeting him later, but Bobby was prepping the surface of the lake to be smooth and perfect. He skated along in ice form, traveling backwards with his hands clasped behind his back and whistling a cheerful tune as ice fanned and spread and smoothed out beneath him with the help of his mutant powers. He circled around, making his way back towards the snowy shore to check his progress. Spring would be coming soon and the lake would thaw, but today - today was all about hockey.
