Rogue always had a soft spot for romance. She would never admit it to anyone, especially not Remy. He would tease her and then ask her if he was like any of the heroes in the novels she adored so much. Rogue didn't want that embarrassment to come forward, even if he may or may not have reminded her of some roguish heroes in the tales. She didn't want Kevin to know because she was embarrassed he'd think less of her for getting caught up in what many considered trashy fiction. But her favorite romances weren't the bodice rippers. But that's all anyone ever thought about when they heard "romance novels." In the end, it was like Rogue lived vicariously through the novels. Her inability to make physical contact with someone by skin kept her from what she felt completed a relationship. It was an emotional connection, but there was the physical part of it too. It was the whole package, and Rogue couldn't deliver. But in the book she could be that girl and she could have all of it all together. She made her way into the library and wandered around, seeing who was there and trying to figure out if anyone was already in the section she wanted to go to. Despite the school's numerous academic and reference books, it also had a plentiful selection of novels meant for reading. Rogue had already made her way through the novels of Jane Austen and the poetry of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and she now sought something else. Seeing no one was in the library or at least not venturing into the section she desired. The librarian was good enough to mix the genres together under the general "fiction" label so snatching books wasn't all that obvious, but at the same time it meant that Rogue had to look up authors and come knowing already what she searched for. She was an expert now in the way the area was organized and with a small list scribbled onto paper in her gloved hand, she searched for the books on her list. Some of them the school didn't have, others they did and so she took those off the shelves. She had about five books tucked onto her arm, cradled into her elbow when she decided to stop. This was good for now and she'd likely finish them before the end of the following week. Still, it was something for now and she'd return soon for more. When she'd been on the road with Magneto and Mystique, she had only a couple of books she owned and they were still with them, if they even bothered to keep them. Rogue went to jail half-crazed and not thinking about the books she'd read so many times that pages were falling out of the binding. She'd stolen tape to put them back in, as public libraries weren't at the top of Magneto's places to hit in his determination to prove mutant superiority. Coming to the library counter, she checked the books out, glancing about almost as if she were scared someone would magically appear nearby and ask what she was reading. The librarian was kind enough not to ask questions and instead just scanned and stamped, and soon Rogue had her pile of books clutched close to her chest, making a hasty retreat to her room. She told herself she'd do her homework first before she'd start reading, but considering how little she cared about Calculus, chances were she'd make up reasons why she needed to read first and worry about derivatives later. |
