Rating: PG
Frosty the Snowman had nothing on Bobby Drake when he was in his element. The thing about Bobby's powers was that he always was in his element. There were water molecules in the air even in the driest of deserts for him to manipulate and form ice from. Bobby had also been working with Charles to learn how to not only turn his body into living organic ice, but to transfer it even further and into mist or water. It was a slow process, especially as Bobby wasn't known for being especially studious when it came to his powers. He honestly didn't believe what they told him, that if he wasn't careful, his powers could trigger another Ice Age. All he wanted to do was finish the training session and get back to his video games.
But the ice rink was his pride and joy every year. Not only because he loved hockey, but because it was something he could create that others could enjoy as well. Bobby was eager to get started and as soon as classes got out on Friday afternoon, he was down by the lake in his Hawaiian shirt with pineapples on it and bright palm trees with jeans and no sign of a jacket. The chill of winter was no match for how cold the Iceman could get. In fact, as he stopped at the shore and offloaded his backpack filled with supplies like granola bars, Mt. Dew, sketches of the rink, and mathematical measurements of the lake and its depths, Bobby's living flesh and bone crackled and shone, changing from boy to walking ice.
He amused himself with thoughts of how he should imitate scenes from Rise of the Guardians or Frozen, and then made it happen, stepping out onto the already pretty frozen lake to walk confidently onto its surface. Ice crackled beneath his feet as he worked his mutation and froze where he went, sinking ice deeply, all the way to the bottom the further out he strolled. It was choppy at first, rough edges and uneven surfaces dusted with snow, and Iceman stood on the edge of the deepest part of the lake, looking into the dark water and his own icy reflection from his position on a pillar of frozen water.
"Welp, here goes. You got this, Bobby," he told himself with a nod. Cullen would be there soon and Kevin would be there the next day to try it out once he was finished.
Ice splintered out in all directions on the lake where Bobby stood. He started forming it, grinning to himself and the ease with which his powers answered him. Bobby rarely got to use his powers to this extent and each year he looked forward to building and maintaining the ice skating rink because it meant he could 'go all out', or mostly out, with his powers without worrying about breaking anything or hurting someone. He worked his way closer to the shore, feet rising up onto one of his trademark ice slides as he did, which carried him like he was riding a wave or skateboarding through thin air, leaving a trail of ice ramps in his wake.
"Wooohooo!" he shouted, pushing and pulling at the ice of the lake to do his bidding. Shapes took form that resembled different objects - a car with a stop sign, a newspaper stand, a crowd of people waiting to cross the street - all made out of ice. Then he crashed through it on a looping slide, shattered glass splintering and reforming into a smooth surface in his wake that even reflected the sky. Gradually, the ice rink began to take shape and eventually, Bobby had to take a break for a snack to renew some energy and swooped back to the shore, ice slides looking like a network of roller coasters in his wake before he released them from their icy grip and they dissipated into the air as returned water molecules that then formed snow and dusted the fresh surface of his handiwork.
Afternoon of Saturday the 18th
Bobby woke up early the next morning with eagerness to get started again, and before most of the other students were stirring around on a Saturday morning with no school, he was out by the lake again putting the finishing touches on the ice rink. It was technical work now, making sure it was level, making sure it was regulation size for hockey, making sure the ice was safe and frozen all the way to the bottom without upsetting the natural balance of the lake itself and its living inhabitants. Ice could be serious business, and Bobby wanted to make sure it was perfect when Charles and the other staff members came out to inspect his work.
He took particular pride in the moment Professor Xavier gave his nod of approval and praised his craftiness, telling him he was doing even better than the year before and that he expected even greater things in the future.
Bobby was beaming as he texted Jubilee to tell her he'd done it, impressed Xavier, then messaged Kevin to tell him the time had come to take the first honors of skating on the glass-cut surface of the transformed lake. Then Bobby collapsed back into a pile of snow to relax. He was exhausted.
