Kevin was perplexed. And happy. But mostly perplexed over how he felt tonight. He'd had birthday get-togethers before but none of them made him feel so blissfully happy and hopelessly despairing. It was his first birthday without his father and so far away from Atlanta. Of course, he wished his dad was here, singing that slightly off-key happy birthday to him and telling him to blow out the candles on the birthday cake he bought every year from the bakery on Olive Street. But as sad as it was to think so, in a way, he was believing that losing his father gave him a family in return, and maybe that wasn't so bad of a deal. He would've never met any of the people present if he'd been a normal boy back in Georgia, working part-time as a cashier at a gas station. Maybe everything did happen for a reason.
For now, he pushed philosophical justifications asides and only wanted to enjoy his sixteenth birthday with his friends. The garden was one of his favorite places at the school, which was why he picked it to host the gathering. He wanted his friends to share into something that made him happy, as they had made him. As promised by Rogue and Remy, there was the cake he wanted and some other light refreshment placed on a picnic table. No strippers, thankfully.
Once there were enough people around, he introduced Abby to the small group, especially to Remy and Rogue. When he was sure that they would get along without any ill outcome, he left to mingle with the rest of the people who'd been kind enough to show up. After all, he didn't want to seem like he was too clingy to Abby and keeping her away from the world. She was too good for that.
Tonight felt like it would be a good night. Kevin certainly hoped it would turn out to be so.
