Everyone had seemed to noticed Kitty's awkward flitting from group to group. Whenever anyone tried to pull her into the conversation, all she could do was give a distracted hum of agreement before moving on, trying to sneak closer to the door. Her Excalibur teammates were the most eager to pull her into conversation, but not even Piotr could extract more than a fast smile and a nod. She didn't even think about how obviously she was distracted and how it would translate into finding her target. Kurt was at least kind enough to continue whatever conversation was being forced upon her and even distracted Piotr when Kitty disappeared as soon as the birthday girl arrived.
It was easy to cut a path through a packed party when you could walk through solid matter. Kitty had taken a shortcut through the punch table to reach Jubilee before anyone else could pounce her. It worked, but when she found herself just feet away from Jubilee, she could barely manage a, "Hey."
You're a winner. With a cringe, Kitty tried to push the negativity out of her mind and smiled at Jubilee. "Yeah. I mean, not right now. You just go here." She was backpedaling now, trying to escape the inevitable. But it sounded like a good excuse. "I just wanted to come over and say-"
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" the booming voice of Guido shouted. The man's towering shadow had been lost on Kitty, who had been too distracted by the beautiful blush on Jubilee's cheeks. When they were interrupted, she just looked down and took a step to the side, giving Guido all the room he needed to swoop in and grab Jubilee in a hug. Guido was large enough that Kitty could easily make her escape now. Maybe she could find a nice bush to hide to avoid having to confess all these feelings at once.
