log: jean grey and lorna dane
summary. [Backdated] Jean comes across a crabby Lorna in the kitchen and she tries to offer advice on Lorna's displeasure over Alex's fairy tale affair by shedding some light on her own dilemma.
LORNA: Lorna Dane wasn't in the greatest of moods. Which was more or less par for the course since she wasn't exactly the chirpiest person living at Paradise and didn't seem to grasp the concept of putting on a happy face for the sake of the people around her. So it was hardly surprising then that she was making a heck of a lot of noise in the communal kitchen, banging various pots and pans together as she attempted to cook what was possibly supposed to resemble pasta. Instead it was turning into one huge clump of half-thawed crispy shells and sticking to the pan, which was just awesome. Obviously this was all Alex's fault. Him and his weird Robin Hood sex dream with some girl that wouldn't come forward so Lorna could just slap her and get it over with. And her thoughts were promptly interrupted when the pasta began boiling over, scaulding her in the process. "Ow, ow..." Lorna squealed, drawing her hand back sharply and staring at the angry red mark on her palm. First aid was apparently not her thing.
JEAN: Meanwhile, Jean Grey had been in a perfectly okay mood -- as long as she didn't think about two important men in her life who made things increasingly confusing for her. She kept herself busy when she didn't want to be thinking about that and getting something to eat during her study session seemed like the perfect plan. Jean had just been stopping by the kitchen for a second when she spotted Lorna. Really, she kept her mouth shut when it concerned her opinion about the younger girl, mostly because Jean adored Alex and Alex seemed fond of Lorna. Jean would passively acknowledge the girl but generally try not to get involved. The girls came off as day and night and Jean just wanted to peacefully coexist. So that was why when, Jean had seen Lorna in the kitchen and obviously in a bad mood, she immediately turned to step back out and let her have the space until she was done -- until Lorna burned herself and yelped in pain. Jean didn't think twice before turning back to her. "What happened?" She already moved closer, hovering near the first aid kit on the way over. Hopefully it was still stocked, which she checked.
LORNA: "The stupid pot boiled over, what does it look like?" she snapped at Jean, taking her frustration out on the other girl even though she was only trying to help her. She did manage to refrain from pushing Jean away though, instead watching warily as the first aid kit appeared and then tentatively offering out her hand. There was a moment of silence and then Lorna shook her head and did something completely uncharacteristic. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled at you, it's not like this is your fault." Technically it was Lorna's but she wasn't having that much of an off day, so there was little chance that she'd fess up to that too. "If it's anyone's fault then it's Alex's," she added darkly. "I mean is it like a family trait or something? Is Scott just as obtuse and frustrating and... ugh. It would be so much easier if he was repulsive. Then I could just move on and find somebody else." But unfortunately hotness also seemed to run in the Summers family gene pool.
JEAN: Any attitude sent her way went unnoticed; besides, Jean hardly doubted it was directed specifically at her -- it wasn't literally her fault that Lorna ended up scalding herself. Still, Jean smiled politely when Lorna offered up an apology. She hadn't taken Lorna's lashing out personally but she accepted the apology graciously. With her telekinesis, Jean makes sure the burners on the stove were off with a soft click of the dial. She set out the first aid kit on the counter and gestured for Lorna to join her at the sink, which she turned on manually to let the cool water run into the sink. "Go ahead and put your hand under that for a little bit," she instructed as she popped open the first aid kit, looking for any burn ointment and plucking that out to set aside for use. She kept an eye on Lorna's hand, reaching over to grab the soap so she can wash her hands and then carefully wash the site of Lorna's burn. She pressed her lips together as she tried to formulate a reply regarding the Summers boys. "Well, good looks tend to run in the family," Jean trailed off, rinsing Lorna's hand. "Alex usually isn't as frustrating as his brother, though. Did he do something?" Jean had a soft spot for Alex and she wasn't too keen on Scott at the moment, possibly for reasons similar to Lorna's. She found it hard to believe that he would cause someone anguish, much less be responsible for Lorna burning herself.
LORNA: For once Lorna actually went along with someone's instructions and didn't argue, holding her hand under the water and then allowing Jean to tend to her wound. Turned out it was kind of handy having a med student around the hotel. Jean had just saved her a trip to Cecilia's or the nearest free clinic. And Lorna would rather suffer than be caught in a free clinic, gross. "Oh he did something alright. Problem is, the person he did wasn't me." And just saying it out loud made her want to stab something all over again. Which was probably why the few pieces of cutlery left out on the work surfaces levitated a few inches before dropping down onto the board again. "I guess he and Maid Marian got a little cozy while we were all asleep," she added unhappily. "And now I feel like an idiot for waiting around like a lovesick fat girl. I'm the girl guys are supposed to chase after in the movies. Not the girl who sits at home braiding her hair and stuffing her face with ice cream."
JEAN: Thankfully, Jean was not intimidated by Lorna's small display of power -- she did not feel threatened and could defend herself with a thought if the younger girl got emotional or careless. She let it go unmentioned too, releasing Lorna's hand to sit under the water while she searched around for the paper towels. However, when Lorna mentioned Maid Marian, Jean's expression faltered slightly and she thanked god that her back was momentarily to the other girl. Jean had acquired a natural poker face over the years, having to grant people the privacy of their thoughts and to hide her astonishment over the gall of some. She just wasn't accustomed to people necessarily voicing those thoughts. It also did not help that Jean knew who Alex's mystery maiden was -- Rogue had confided in her that much, after she and Alex reached an amicable agreement of no telling. Jean did not fall under the 'no telling' clause.
"I don't think anyone is expecting you to sit at home and shovel ice cream down your throat," Jean started as she tore a couple sheets off the roll before heading back to Lorna. "And it's hardly his fault -- we can't be held responsible for what happened in our sleep. We were being mentally and emotionally manipulated. We can't hold people account for what they did or didn't do." It sounded like a nice little clip because Jean had said it to herself multiple times, trying not to blame Logan for the fact that he didn't wake her up and that it was Scott. She sighed as she continued. "No matter how easy it might be. You were my evil-stepmother, right? I don't hold that against you." She flashed a small smile at Lorna before shutting off the faucet and handing her the towels.
LORNA: It was a very good thing Jean's back had been turned to Lorna because no doubt the younger girl would have noticed that change in expression and pounced on it right away. She looked slightly chagrined when Jean brought up the evil step-mother thing but then she shrugged. "Oh, well yeah. But that was different, I didn't try to make out with you." Just kill her off apparently. A confused look crossed her face then and she a held a hand up. "Wait. If you were Snow White then how did you wake up? ...Oh my god, was Logan Prince Charming? That's so weird." Because Lorna can't imagine him being dashing and gentlemanly, just sort of growly and rude. Which admittedly can be a turn on if you're into the whole manly mountain man thing, which she guessed Jean was.
JEAN: "Logan was not Prince Charming," Jean immediately replied, a hint of annoyance lacing her words. And she wasn't locked up with several dwarves; she was pretty sure that was Emma. Jean didn't think that it was important to correct -- it wasn't what was important here. The fact that it wasn't Logan that woke her up had bothered her but she tried to rationalize that, if Jason were involved, it was most likely part of his plan. That did not make Jean feel better because the recent distance and tension between her and Logan made her think that Jason had succeeded. She applied the ointment to Lorna's burns as she tried to change the topic. "This ought to help. Let me get some bandages."
LORNA: It probably said something that Lorna hadn't even bothered to get Emma and Jean's characters straight. As far as she knew they'd both been in some enchanted sleep and blah, blah, blah. The rest was just details. "Yeah, I guess he's probably more likely to be the stable-hand or something," Lorna replied in agreement, apparently ignoring the annoyed tone in Jean's voice. Her eyes lit up then as she added with a grin, "Ooh, or maybe the groundskeeper? Either way, he'd definitely be the servant you have a wild affair with because your husband doesn't pay you enough attention." She'd seen it happen a million times in TV period dramas. "You're not going to tell me who woke you up, are you?" Lorna asked after a minute, curiosity getting the better of her. "Why not?"
JEAN: With so many sleeping princesses in her evil kingdom, who expected her to keep track? That's what she had minions for. "Not a groundskeeper, either. And it's not important --" But Jean knew that by not talking about it, it was made into a bigger deal than it needed to be. Maybe it was a big deal or maybe her (and her prince charming) were overreacting. She assumed that's why he wasn't talking to her -- it was why she wasn't talking to him. As for Logan, Jean didn't want to talk to him about the experience either. Jean had only been active and lucid for a small portion of the dream before everyone started waking up; she wasn't clear on exactly who had what roles but she knew Logan was not connected to her. She sighed, resigned to the fact that if it wasn't important, she should have no trouble telling Lorna. It might even feel good to tell someone (besides Rogue, but those girls were good at keeping each others' secrets). "It was Scott." She tried to sound nonchalant.
LORNA: "Scott?" Lorna repeated in disbelief. Although now that she thought about it, it did make sense. Everyone knew Jean and Scott had some sort of epic history together and had been friends for years and etc. etc. Lorna had never really bothered to listen beyond that point, although now she was regretting it. Since graduating high school there hadn't been many chances for a good gossip. A more wicked smile crossed her face then, as she raised her eyebrows at Jean. "Wow. I bet Logan just loves that." She paused for a beat and then added, "So is he a good kisser? He looks like he would be. He's got that whole brooding, intense thing going on."
JEAN: Jean resisted the urge to roll her eyes as soon as Lorna brought up Logan. "Logan doesn't know," she started before clarifying, "nor does he need to." It was best for all parties involved if it just went unsaid, in Jean's opinion. She was also not above erasing Lorna's memories of this conversation should her secret be jeopardized. There were some things about which Jean was highly private. This would be one of them. She was done putting the bandages on Lorna's hands and technically had the opening to escape. "And I don't know; it was a dream world, so it wasn't real. I have no comparison -- aren't we supposed to be talking about Alex?" Can they change the topic to the other Summers brother before Jean regrets admitting it.
LORNA: "Well I'm not going to tell him. I've got no interest in being stabbed for delivering the message." Plus Jean hadn't done anything to piss her off so there was really no reason for Lorna to do anything vindictive. Of course she'd probably hold this information over the other girl's head for as long as possible. Lorna was about to open her mouth and disagree with Jean's statement, point out that it had to be at least a little real, but she stopped. If she said that then it would mean that Alex and whichever slut he'd slept with had something going on in reality too, which would negate the whole point of this conversation. "You know what? You're right. It wasn't real. So Scott gave you the kiss of life, big deal. It's not like you felt anything when it happened." She nodded then, apparently pleased with the decision she'd reached, and stood up. "Everyone should just forget all about it and move on."
JEAN: Not like you felt anything when it happened -- Jean managed to keep a straight face while the other girl reasoned herself back into a level-minded place that meant Rogue was somewhat in the clear. Jean plastered on her diplomatic smile and gave a small nod. "Exactly," was all she said as she snapped the first aid kit closed, an uneasy feeling settling in her stomach.
